while your theory makes sense, swans, and even though ZITS (hehe) has a message relevant to unlce monty, i think that ZITS was filmed earlier.
the message could have referred to Gustav, warning monty that he was perhaps posing as gustav or gustav sebald (these may be the same people, but would gustav sebald warn monty that he, himself, wasn't one of "us"?)
also wasnt there a picture of the main cast by the snowman, pointing to the boy in the center, and saying3 actors from ZITS posing in front of the snowman gustav built esp. for this scene In the center is the actor who played Young Rolf, whose name escapes me, Omar, maybe? pg 67
this would prove, (if olaf and omar are the same ppl) that the film was filmed much earlier than hastily during the reptile room.
also we know that olaf enjoyed watching the film, and who wouldn't like to see a movie starring themselves?

k you confused me a bit too, there. I have had the knowledge that olaf may have a son, but i forget where i got that info. Your theory makes sense, too, although if gustav was indeed gustav sebald, how does one fake being drowned, and then run and make a film about it? although that would clear up the reason sebald knew about the treason.
also monty could have had other orphans... long shot.
also, would olaf have known, or heard the sebald code in the theatre? he may have heard its message, and then killed monty during the night to prevent him blowing his cover, removing the children, and then finding a survivor of a fire. then, uncle monty died in vain because we can saftly assume that he didn't learn the sebald code.
the survivor, if the film had been filmed earlier, could be the survivor of the snicket fire. im pretty sure that there was a snicket fire.
i dont want the series to be staged! that would ruin it all! sure, they may have had, *some* sort of order that they *happend* to end up with all VFDers, but THAT WOULD WRECK THE SERIES!
umm i geuss thats it...

In our world, a movie can take years from scripting through shooting, post-production, and distribution where it finally appears in your local theater. An important question for us is "How long did it take from Gustav Sebald initiating the Zombies in the Snow project until it was shown in the theater near Uncle Monty's house?" If it's less than a week, then its hidden message reasonably applies to the Baudelaires. If it's longer and it's still supposed to apply to the Baudelaires, then Gustav Sebald was better at seeing the future than ever Madame Lulu was.

Who says that Gustav (Monty's assistant) is the same Gustav Sebald? I think they are two completely different people. Now, if Olaf did know the sebald code.. (though it is possible that code could have been used after Olaf left).. and Olaf decided to kill Monty so Monty wouldn't blow his cover that does not mean Monty did not know the code. That just means Olaf was able to kill Monty before Monty was able to get rid of Olaf.. In LSUA they talk about the sebald code in the VFD transcript and in the end we meet O (who prefers to be called T) and E.. now if O is indeed Olaf then perhaps he learned about the sebald code before he left, or he found out by spying on that meeting. (since it is possible that the sebald code is after Olaf's time.. and since Monty is rather old it could be after Monty's time as well.. which would explain why Monty could be a member of VFD and not know the sebald code) But sometimes I wonder if the O is really Olaf.. or if it stands for someone else. Now if this film was filmed earlier.. then the three children could be the three snicket children and the survivor could be from that fire.. or perhaps the film was filmed so ahead of its time that it was about the Quagmire fire? (thus perhaps that's why there was that photo of the three children, two being sent to prufrock) Perhaps VFD planned the Quagmire fire and originally planned to have the three children stay together and be sent to Monty's. So the three children could be the Quagmires.. or maybe it is powdered faced womens family. It's hard to have an exact timeframe and the only thing we really have to go by is that the only three children to stay with Monty (that we know about) were the Baudelaires. I think the important part of this message though is there a survivor.. (a future character or perhaps a character we've already met, and will perhaps find out more about) and the town where Monty was supposed to meet the VFD. Where is this town? Oh, and btw, I looked up Rolf in the dictionary and it said to see "rollo.. otherwise known as rolf the ganger" and I looked up Rollo.. and it said something like the first duke of normandy.. and it said see roy hrolf. I don't know if that means anything but maybe Handler was referencing something that pertains to Roy Hrolf's history. (http://www.cumorah.com/etexts/knrwy10.txt) This is an interesting link that supposedly lists Roy Hrolf.. but I don't have time to fully read everything but basically it lists the early Kings of Norway. /offtopic.. when you search roy hrolf you find a lot of family lines, and I actually found a family name of mine (by marriage).. so hah, I'm related to Count Olaf p; People think Count Olaf may have a son because well.. why not have a son? Also in LSUA the story "the three languages" mentions an old count and his son.. and I think there is a list of Olaf's henchmen and I think it lists a possible son, I forget though. could you explain this in english please

i was only saying that when an author actually says that there are 2 caracters w/ the same name they are usually the same people. in general.
madam lulu didn't really see the future, but she sure gave olaf what he wanted.
also, in the pics of the kids sent to prufrock, the one to the far right, the boy sent to prufrock, looks younger than the other two.
also the only thing we know about gustav, the assistant, was that a) he stopped coming about a week before the bauds came to monty's B) he apparently was drowned by olaf in the swarthy swamp.
on the map on page 150, its seems weird that the briny beach isn't on an ocean... i always pictured it as an ocean...
also on the map, in the swarthy swamp, is that an alligator? also, in #2, if this cow person was indeed a member of olafs (?)troupe wouldnt he recognize the voice of his leader? and also, since when did olaf have a gravvelly voice?

oohh... dictionary term: Alpine 1.Of, relating to, or characteristic of the Alps or their inhabitants. 2.Of or relating to high mountains.
this could mean monty wanted to bring them to mt. fraught, where there are SALMON for FISHING. i dont see any villages, though.

OK, FOR THE LAST TIME, THE MR. BAUDELAIRE IS DEAD! read TSS, on the second to last page (and the last sentence on the page before that), lemony clearly states that "the grown men in the BAUDELAIRES lives that were dead, JACQUES SNICKET and THE CHILDRENS FATHER, would never walk again." and THE CHILDRENS FATHER cant mean the quags father because it says "in the BAUDELAIRES LIVES", and they have never met the quags father so .

No, my friend isn't Daniel Handler, although if she was, then I would be bugging him about what happens and to lend me his copy of TSS instead of her. I know that, but it seems like he is, though. I suppose you could be right. It just says the fire, and we are thinking Baudelaire fire or Quagmire fire. What about Snicket fire? I know.....Lemony. Let's think outside of the box.
