Hi everyone! Im Soleil Flower and I am a new member on this message board! I am looking forward to discussing one of my favorite book series with all of you!

Anyway for my first post I would like to ask you all a question... have any of you ever hear the song "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin? The lyrics are as follows:

If any of you were arround in the 90's you have probally heard it as it was a chart topper. Anyway the lyrics have startling similarity's to the books. I dont really know what to make of it but it seems that to many connections are here for this to be a coincidence... what do you all think? Authors draw from all sorts of places for their own works. Handler drew from several poems, and obviously that song. He's used so many literary puns and references to other literature I'm surprised he'd use a song. Yes, I think there's definitely a connection, even though Sunny hasn't yet been hypnotized. By the way, welcome! I'm not too old a member myself, it's been a week or so.

I just think there are to many coincidences in the song. It talks about a book and a box of tools which are things Klaus and Violet love/d very much. It talks about the Kitchen, we all know Sunny has recently developed a fondness for cooking. It also frequently talks about fire, and @ one point hynosis, fire seems to play a key role in the books, and although Sunny herself has never been hypnotized, her brother Klaus has. The word Count appears as well, although here it refers to the verb "count" rather than a person. Perhaps you are right Swans but we cannot be sure yet! And nice to meets you!

Very good points... although the song came out in 1996 Handler could have been inspired by the song, not the other way arround, if they are in fact amigos, and I will most undoubtedly look into that, then perhaps Colvin was the one who first got the idea for ASoUE, and Handler just touched it up a bit... actually scratch that a lot. Anyway I'm of to see if I can find a connection between the two! If I dont talk to any of you, like I always say, have an awesome day!

I think the song has certain allusions to the series. It really seems to be similar to the series.

I definitely think Handler heard the song and put a bit of it into his series. He didn't necessarily shape the series with it, and he didn't have to be inspired by it, but I think he certainly used it when coming up with certain ideas. I'm under the impression that the whole series was spontaneous and he drew stuff in to make the books quickly. Interview quote
"When did you decide to write A series of Unfortunate Events?
Handler:I just saw all these books with happy endings and decided a book where the characters have a hard life would be good for a change"
Nice theory Soleil flower I don't come up with that many new theories, I mostly comment on old ones.

what? Oh, and just for fun, the prefix Ol means alcohol and that makes sense. Well, let's find more connections between the song and the books. ;D

I never knew the Ol=alcohol thing. I do know that Olaf means ancestor.
