Before the series started getting really popular, "signed" copies of the books were often sent out to bookstores with promo/event packs. I've only been to one in store signing (for the Unauthorized Biography, in New York), but it was quite an event. Daniel made excuses about why Lemony couldn't be there in person, and played a song on his accordian. Then he asked someone in the audience to draw a picture of Count Olaf, and when they did, it was exactly like the illustrations in the book...because the man in the audience was Brett Helquist. They both signed books for about three hours. A Lemony Snicket autograph will normally be a library embossing stamp which says "From the library of Lemony Snicket" with the words "With all due respect" and the date written around the stamp. Brett Helquist signs with a normal autograph. Since Daniel Handler lives in California, it seems logical that book signings in the rest of the country would only take place immediately following the release of a new book. So it stands to reason that if there hasn't been one near you yet, you'll have to wait for the next book to come out.

When I first become obsessed, I purchased a few signed copies on ebay. But now, they are just painful reminders of how *I* haven't actually been to a signing and I don't even care about my signed books, cause I just bought someone else's experience. It's not the signature (or stamp) that's important to me. I want to meet him. I just lend my signed copies out like my others, not even caring if something happens to them.

Dear Daniel Handler, Please come to Maryland and do this or else I will drain all the liquid out of your body and replace it with Fanta. Sincerely, Madam Luna.

Has he EVER come to Canada?
You know... one day, we have to have an ASOUE convention, like Nimbus, only... not. Danny and Brett and Meredith will come, and we'll all meet there and get to see eachother. And they'll serve puttanesca sauce on pasta, and we'll dine Al Fresco and professors will give talks about ASOUE and there will be exhibits and maybe the people from the movie will come, if we ask them and they don't suck too much. And we'll have a little fanart section and people will sit there and draw and talk to Brett and... *sigh* I wish...
Send it, Luna. Tell him to come here, too.

I live in northern California... I think he lives in SF.... (San Francisco)... Handler had a book signing in SF a few months ago, at the Fort Mason center. Sorry you missed it. In general, he makes the book signing rounds when he has a new book to promote, and not between writing cycles like he is right now (both the next Lemony book and Handler's next novel are several months away). When Grim Grotto is released, start watching your city's weekly independent paper (in San Franscisco, that would be The Guardian or SF Weekly) and I guarantee it will be mentioned. Or, as someone else has suggested, sign up for the e-mail newsletter at lemonysnicket.com .
