Actually, it's more likely that Bertrand takes his name from the French poet Alosyus Bertrand. He's considered like the "inventor" (cough) of the poems written in prose. However he faced a terrible public reception, and hanged himself as his art wasn't understood. Charles Baudelaire discovered his creations some years after, and fell in love with Bertrand's works. He contributed to promote his writings and made the public recognize that Aloysius was a visionnary. He went farther when he tried to imitate his style of writing in order to produce what he wanted to be his masterpiece, but it never worked ; he simply recognized that Aloysius' style could not be equaled, but this did not stop his admiration. Charles exchanged letters with other poets and referred to Aloysius as his "spiritual father." That's my point : Bertrand was Baudelaire's "father," and it became the father of the Baudelaire orphans in Asoue. However I love your theory about Dante... I guess the name Bertrand refers to both Aloysius and Dante, after all.
However I spotted something WEIRD... In TWW it is stated that the orphans' allergy to peppermints comes from the Baudelaire family. And in TBL it is stated that Beatrice had the same allergy. Scenaristic inconsistencies ? Could be. But there's also the possibility of...
AN INCEST ! (dramatic music)
Oh, don't look at me like that, Handler already wrote a whole book about incest. Beatrice and Bertrand could have been siblings with reciproc feelings to each other. Of course, they couldn't say it like that in front of people, so thay never revealed that secret. And Lemony, of course, didn't know that, and thought that Beatrice was in love with him, as she wasn't interested in other guys.
Dramatic scene in TBL :
Lemony : Marry me !
Beatrice : I think I need to use a little metaphore here.
Lemony : Bring it on.
Beatrice : Lemony, we're like... Salt and pepper. And the pepper is in love with her own brother.
Lemony : OMGWTF
Well, stupid theory, I know. Maybe this was the "truly haunting secret" about the Baudelaire parents ? Well, Lemony does not seem to actually hate Bertrans. My guess is that's because Beatrice fell in love with him only when Lemony had been far away for a very long time (due to the Punctillo's articles).
