There seem to be some mixed feelings about Fiona around here. I personally loved her as a character, and prefer her over Isadora for Klaus. Dante's pushed me (like he's pushed so many others) to start a thread about it, so let's discuss her personality, and which girl you'd prefer to be with Klaus, etc..
But if Isadora should come up (and she will) try to keep it Fiona-centric.

I think that Fiona gets a lot of unfair treatment from her detractors. It strikes me that some of the allegations levelled against her would be equally true of the Baudelaires - betraying new friends in order to save one's family, for instance. I also think that Handler probably thinks of her as a more interesting character, on the grounds that a) she is, and b) after TGG Klaus is forever pining for Fiona while Isadora may as well have vanished into a plot hole (oh wait). (like he's pushed so many others) ...?

Personally, I like Klaus to be with Isadora, but I know there have been almost no signs of Klaus liking her or anything like that (other than as friends). And because of this, I tend to not like Fiona at times, but really, she is a good character. (feels lame) And uh, I dislike fanfictions in which Fiona is the evil one.

Just a joke, Dante I do think Fiona is a great character. She's one of the more complex in the series, and has probably affected Klaus more than anyone has (other than Olaf, of course). I think she's more interesting than the Quagmires, actually. She's got a better story, since with the Quagmires, it's mostly the same as the Baudelaires'.

Thedoctorowell had a theory a little while ago according to which Fiona is not a traitor at all. If she is a traitor she certainly does not stay one for every long; she double-crosses Olaf and steals his submarine as soon as his back is turned. (And manages to turn Fernald as well, it seems.) I agree with mijahu that she is a complex character, and I think she and Klaus have more potential than Klaus and Isadora, who were indeed just friends. Unfortunately, both Fiona and Isadora have been swallowed by the Great Unknown, and I believe strongly that one cannot come back from the Great Unknown, so nothing will come of either pairing (unless, of course, Klaus is swallowed as well, as certain people have supposed. There's not enough disagreement in this thread, is there? Dante: Where do the Baudelaires do that? (One character, by the way, who certainly parallels Fiona is Friday, who also deserts the Baudelaires out of loyalty to her family, and uses language very like Fiona's in explaining it.) tk: That's good to hear - I was a bit worried how your story would work out.

Well, they don't actually do it, but they were going to. I quote from TGG Chapter Twelve: --- Klaus sighed, and looked at his sister. “Maybe we shouldn’t be hesitating here,” Klaus said. “Maybe we should be rescuing our captain, instead of reading books of poetry and looking at old photographs. I don’t want to lose Fiona.” “Fiona’s safe with her brother,” Violet said, “and I’m sure she’ll join us when she can. We need to decode this message, or we might lose everything. In this case, he or she who doesn’t hesitate is lost.” “What if we decode the message before Fiona arrives?” Klaus asked. “Do we wait for her to join us?” “We wouldn’t have to,” Violet said. “The three of us could properly operate this submarine by ourselves. All we’d need to do is repair the porthole, and we could probably steer the Queequeg out of the Carmelita.” “We can’t abandon her here,” Klaus said. “She wouldn’t abandon us.” “Are you sure?” Violet asked. Klaus sighed, and looked at the photograph again. “No,” he said. “Let’s get to work.” --- There you have it. The Baudelaires were going to do exactly what Fiona does - ditch their new pal for the sake of family. Not even that, in fact; they were just going to ditch her if she took too long. Our heroes, everybody! Fiona, on the other hand, had to choose between the Ungratefulaires and her long-lost brother, and in addition Olaf had promised - whether honestly or not, although I like to think he was being truthful - to help her find Widdershins if she'd help burn down the Hotel Denouement. Given that the Baudelaires end up helping Olaf burn down the Hotel Denouement, I'd say siding with Olaf was a pretty good deal for Fiona. Even if, as noted, she betrayed him again and took off with Fernald and the Carmelita at the first opportunity. I assume that they decided they would be better off seeking out Widdershins on their own, and with the Carmelita under their captaincy it'd be far more efficient. Shame it all happened off-screen; it must have been a fascinating reversal to see in Fernald.

I'm sure that's right. Fiona's desertion seems more disturbing because she is actually allying herself with a villain, and the Baudelaires haven't done that yet. But of course they will.
So, all of us seem to be defending Fiona (even tk, the notorious Klaus/Isadora shipper). Where are all these haters we keep being told about?

It's been about four years since TGG was published. Perhaps over time some of them changed their minds.

even tk, the notorious Klaus/Isadora shipper ;D You made me laugh, hermes. I've always thought that this section of 667 is..sort of, I dunno, hidden..for some reason. Eh. I dunno...maybe people aren't aware of this thread? And I agree with hermes...what Fiona did does seem more disturbing because she's joining Olaf... (and sometimes, I use this excuse to say Isadora would be a better partner for Klaus. )

I don't dislike Fiona, as a character - even though I do prefer Klaus with Isadora. Fiona really didn't stay on the dark side, for very long - and I don't think she ever actually killed anyone. So, thus, she can't be all bad.

I like Fiona as a character, I find her and Fernald (I've forgotten- that is her brother's name, yes?) both interesting and not without some depth. And I really don't have anything against KlausxFiona.
But on the other hand, I shipped KlausxIsadora longer and somewhat prefer it.
I agree. Elaborate, please?
