Another February has bestowed itself upon us, which means it's time once again to discuss ideas for what we might send Daniel Handler for his forty-first birthday on the 28th! For reference, this is what we sent Mr. Handler the previous year, receiving this reply. There are eighteen days until the 28th of February, which leaves us with plenty of time to toss about ideas. Please discuss.

What did we do the previous year? Not last year but the year before that?

Thanks for posting this, Sherry Ann; it's really crept up on us. I did have a plan quite some time ago for something we could do, but I ended up being too busy to set it up so I'm postponing it 'til next year. Last year's effort was pretty exhausting, I think, and I'm not sure that many of us would be entirely up to throwing enough material together in the time available this year. So I'd advocate doing a birthday card again. How old is he going to be? ...Forty-one? Huh, we missed the opportunity to do miserable fortieth birthday and even three-thirteens thirty-ninth birthday jokes.
So yeah. My vote is for another birthday card of many signatures. All in favour?

That can certainly be easily accomplished. Tragedy's suggestion was "41 Reasons to be Concerned" (which could probably be merged with the birthday card idea, actually). But obviously we'll want to allow time for thoughts anyone else would like to put on the table before we make a final decision.

I'm up for anything, but I really like 41 Reasons to be Concerned idea. Maybe for his 42nd, we could do something to do with "42 is the answer to the meaning of life" XD

How would 41 Reasons To Be Concerned work? Would everyone submit a reason to be concerned? And what precisely is Daniel Handler meant to be concerned about? (Well, I guess that's the point of the exercise.) I like the idea, but I'd like to hear a bit more about it.
Each contributor's reason(s) to be concerned being signed with a scan or MS Paint version of their signature would be one way of merging it with the birthday card concept, although I presume an attractive decorative frame would also be included.
(As for his 42nd, I agree that a Douglas Adams reference is pretty much inevitable.)

I'd rather hoped he'd expand on it here, but I think that what you've written is the general idea. 42nd=Adams: Agreed entirely.

I'd like to hear more on what 41 Reasons To Be Concerned is. Still, it just sounds great, so I am in favour of it.

I assume we'd have to find forty-one reasons why, in general, one should be concerned at this time. Blackly humourous ones, I mean. I think "You are one year closer to death" would be going a bit far. I'm thinking maybe factoids, but ones we can add a dark edge to? It'd be nice to hear a bit more about what Tragedy had in mind, certainly.

Political, social, scientific, economic, or spiritual reasons why the general population (along with some personal, Daniel Handler-specific reasons) should be concerned about the passage of time in this day and age. It is an opportunity to show our awareness of world affairs and our sense of humor. Examples: Katy Perry is releasing her next album this year. You should be very concerned. America's sovereign debt is approaching 100% of GDP, and your son's generation will have to foot the bill. You should be very concerned. Your home is located in one of the most earthquake-prone cities in the country. You should be very concerned. Etc. And then the 41st reason can focus on the birthday aspect.

Tragedy, blakegriplingph and I were talking about this on MSN yesterday. I thought it was quite a good idea. I like how, if you keep something simple, it will be the most effective. For example, this. The Snicket Letters from various members of 667 was quite well done, with contributions of fan-fics images and so forth. However, the reply from Snicket was brief - no doubt he was getting chased by villains or something - but to go to all that effort just to receive an image in return must have been quite daunting, but I am sure you would have appreciated it none the less. So yes, this idea of 41 reasons of the great unknown would be perfect, and some people can contribute on behalf of all of us, the specific reason of him starting another chapter in his life, with the series of books we're looking forward to soon.

Excellent; thanks, Tragedy. Okay, so I take it the majority is in favor of 41 Reasons? The next thing we'll have to figure out is how many people plan to participate, whether we're going to add our signitures to the ends of our reasons, and whether tacking on "You should be very concerned" to the end of our sentences is effective or repetitive (the reasons don't sound quite right without them, but on the other hand reading "you should be very concerned" forty-one times may get a bit tiring.)
