NEW SNICKET SERIES BEGINS THIS FALL
NEW YORK -- Against the apparent wishes of the author, a new Lemony Snicket series begins this fall.
Little Brown Books for Young Readers announced Wednesday that "Who Could That Be At This Hour?" will be out in October. It's the first of four volumes of the "All the Wrong Questions" series, a "highly autobiographical account" of Snicket's childhood.
In keeping with a running gag that Snicket - the pen name for series author Daniel Handler - discourages people from reading his books, Little Brown also shared with reporters an email purporting to be from him. The "Snicketemail" asks Little Brown to postpone its announcement.
Although Little Brown plans to print 1 million copies, "Snicket" wonders in the email "why anyone would be interested" in the new series.

Lemony Snicket returns with autobiographical kids' series
By Bob Minzesheimer, USA TODAY
More than five years after the end of A Series of Unfortunate Events, which sold more than 60 million copies, Lemony Snicket (the pen name for Daniel Handler) is writing a new series for kids. Who Could That Be at This Hour?, to be released Oct. 23, is the first in a four-volume series, "All the Wrong Questions," to be published by Little Brown.
It will be illustrated by Seth, pen name for cartoonist Gregory Gallant (Palookaville). Little Brown says the first printing will be 1 million copies. The series imagines Snicket's childhood in what the publisher describes as a "fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted," and chronicles his experiences as "an apprentice in an organization nobody knows about." Snicket himself warns: "These books are questionable and contain questions. I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them."
Written under his name, Handler's most recent book, Why We Broke Up, illustrated by Maria Kalman, is a young adult novel that received 3 and 1/2 stars in a USA TODAY review.
It describes what happens when young love strikes hard and fast for a Jewish girl, bewitched by old movies, who falls for the captain of her high school basketball team. Three of Snicket's 13 Unfortunate titles reached No. 1 on USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list.

Lemony Snicket is back! The bestselling author will be releasing a four-book series entitled All the Wrong Questions, which will be the first authorized autobiographical account of his childhood. Drawing on events from his youth, Snicket will chronicle his experiences as an apprentice in a secretive organization that nobody knows about.
“While there, he began to ask a series of questions — wrong questions that should not have been on his mind,” according to a news release put out Wednesday by publisher HarperCollins. “Who Could That Be at This Hour?" is Snicket’s account of the first wrong question.”
Snicket (the pen name of writer Daniel Handler) adds that, “These books are questionable and contain questions. I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them.”
To add to the excitement, Canadian artist Seth (Gregory Gallant) will be taking on the illustrations for the books. The acclaimed cartoonist — who was recently awarded for the 2011 Harbourfront Festival Prize — is best known for his work in the Palookaville series as well as It’s a Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken, Wimbledon Green and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadians.
All The Wrong Questions will be published Oct. 23, 2012 by HarperCollinsCanada.

New Lemony Snicket Book Gets One Million Copy First Printing, Release Date
"Who Could That Be at This Hour?" arrives in bookstores on Oct. 23 as the first in a new four-book series exploring the youth of the mysterious Snicket.
Who Could it Be at This Hour? explores Snicket's mysterious past for the first time. Little else has been revealed about the book other than it is set in "a fading town" where Snicket becomes "an apprentice in an organization nobody knows about" and starts asking "a series of questions—wrong questions that should not have been on his mind.” Who Could That Be at This Hour? is Snicket’s account of the first wrong question. Little Brown is using the website LSATWQ.com to promote the upcoming series and has released a teaser cover as well.
A Series of Unfortunate Events, the original Lemony Snicket series, has sold over 60 million copies worldwide since its debut in 1999. The books follow three children who are placed in the care of their Uncle Olaf after their parents are killed in a fire. Olaf treats them badly and tries to steal their inheritance. Snicket narrates the books, acting as the children’s biographer. The series comprises thirteen books, with the last appearing in 2006, plus a series of stand-alone books about Snicket himself.
It spawned a 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, and Jude Law as Snicket that grossed $209 million worldwide. Director Brad Silberling has mentioned several times that he would like to do sequel. No word yet if the new series will spur that project along.
Lemony Snicket is the pen name of author Daniel Handler, who invented it to screen junk mail (he would sign up for catalogs as Snicket) and later adopted it for the narrator of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Handler originally started out writing adult novels but when his first book was rejected 37 times, he took up the suggestion to try writing for a younger audience. He has written twenty books under the Snicket pen name as well as three adult novels. His 2011 YA novel, Why We Broke Up (published under his own name) was a Printz Honoree as finalist for best YA book of 2011.
