Chapter 1 Violet screamed as a hand came onto her toboggan, but in a few seconds, she found it was only her brother, Klaus. He managed to squeeze on, which made it a bit less roomy, but everyone felt more comfortable, if comfortable is having half of yourself on a toboggan, and trying to hold a baby sister, in Violet's case. Finally, they reached the end, and as they stopped, Sunny went flying into the snow. "Amtrac!" she called, which meant something along the lines of, "Please find me fast!" Violet and Klaus had of course no option ("Let's hurry up! She went that way!" yelled Violet), but when they got to the place where Sunny should have been, there were two sets of footprints leading in opposite directions, and Sunny wasn't there. "Well, where is she now?" Klaus said obnoxiously, a word which here means "to annoy Violet". "I don't know." "What if one of the footprints are Olaf and Esme?" "Well then we'll be headed in the right direction because they're the only people who would take Sunny. Right? Right? Or maybe she's just farther up." "Grumpy..." Klaus muttered to himself.

Chapter I Part II The eldest Baudelaires had been searching for hours, had followed both sets of footprints, and they were worn out. They were about ready to collapse. "Where could Sunny be?" Klaus asked nervously. "I don't know. We followed both sets of footprints." And the elder Baudelaires had no choice but to keep searching. Eventually, they came upon a small cottage. They headed inside. After all, it was their only chance of survival. Knock. Knock knock. No answer. Finally, the door opened, and a gasp was heard.

Chapter I Part III A tall, lean, blond woman had answered. A smile lit up her pale, pinched face. "You are the Baudelaires?" she asked anxiously. "Do you read the Daily Punctilio?" Violet answered the question with another question. "Yes," she nodded. "But I know you are not murderers. Please come in." She abruptly turned to let them in. They did. "My name is...uh...Katherine. My brother is upstairs, if you'd like to talk to him. My--younger brother." The Baudelaires were a bit weirded out by this stranger's odd behavior, but she was offering them hospitality, and didn't believe that they were murderers. A short man, about 5'6" came down the stairs. He loked sad, but, like his sister, his face gleamed when his eyes met the elder Baudelaires. "You-you are the Baudelaires? Oh I've--where's Sunny?" "How did you my sister's name? And--we don't know," Klaus sighs. "Well, we can help..."
