[This is the first songfic I am posting here and was inspired by the many role-plays Peaches and I have done. I hope everyone enjoys it.]
Song Title: You
Song Artist: Evanescence
Ship: Esmé and Jerome Squalor
Author’s Disclaimer: I do not own Esmé and Jerome Squalor. They belong to Lemony Snicket a.k.a. Daniel Handler.
Rating: G
Genre: Romance
Esmé sat back in her chair and examined the letter she had just written. She knew that forgiveness was the last thing she deserved after all she had done, but the least she could do was offer an apology to the man who had taken her back without wanting anything in return.
The words have been drained from this pencil
Sweet words that I want to give you
And I can't sleep
I need to tell you
Goodnight
Esmé folded up the letter and stuck it in an envelope. Clutching it to her chest, she left her room and headed down the hallway to Jerome’s.
She pushed open the door and chose to simply stand there for a few moments. She was just about to place the envelope on the dresser by the door and head back to her own room when her husband’s voice called to her from the darkness.
“Esmé,” Jerome asked, “is that you?”
“Yes,” Esmé replied.
“What is it? Are you sick again?”
“No. I just needed to tell you… goodnight.”
“Come here to me, darling,” Jerome said.
Esmé stepped into the room and crawled into bed beside him.
When we're together, I feel perfect
When I'm pulled away from you, I fall apart
All you say is sacred to me
Your eyes are so blue
I can't look away
As we lay in the stillness
You whisper to me
“I love you, Esmé Gigi Genevieve Squalor,” Jerome whispered as he slowly stroked his fingertips across his wife’s round, taut, pregnant belly. “No matter what you’ve done or who you’ve wronged, I will always, always love you.”
A small sob escaped Esmé at his words, and she pressed his hand against her stomach, kissing his fingers.
Amy, marry me
Promise you'll stay with me
Oh you don't have to ask me
You know you're all that I live for
You know I'd die just to hold you
Stay with you
Somehow I'll show you
That you are my night sky
I've always been right behind you
Now I'll always be right beside you
“I always believed you could be a noble person again,” Jerome said. “I’ve never stopped believing in you, so please. Please say that you’ll marry me. Again.”
“Do you really have to ask me that, Jerome?” Esmé asked.
“You’re all that I live for, Esmé. I would have gladly died in that fire if it meant I could hold you in my arms just once, and for only a few moments.”
“Jerome…”
“Yes?”
“I promise that I’ll make it all up to you,” Esmé said, “even if it takes the rest of my life. And that from now on, I’ll always be right beside you.”
So many nights I cried myself to sleep
Now that you love me, I love myself
I never thought I would say this
I never thought there'd be
You
“Thank you, Jerome. For everything. I love you.”
Jerome sighed in utter happiness as his wife uttered the words he had been waiting to hear for more than a year, and he wrapped his arms around her. She was crying softly now, but it didn’t matter. She had returned, and even more, she loved him. That was enough.
