Okay... In The Ersatz Elevator... The oven used to make the iron fire-pokers hot, uses Farenheit... Now, I only know of one country that uses Farenheit... THE U.S.A.

Poe's wording in TEE eliminates a bunch of entire continents, NA included. NAis considered a foreign country.

Well, it must take place somewhere. They reference other countries, so it must be on this planet. Yes, the towns are made up, but those made-up towns and landmarks are in some country, so... yeah. Just because specific towns and stuff are made up doesn't mean there's not a certain place in mind for them to be.

What Celindra (Sorry for the crap spelling ) is saying, i think, is that the places could be real but Lemony could have used psydonims. E.G: The Great Lakes (Lake Lachrymose), The Rockies (Mortmain Moutain(s)), etc...

So someone already pointed out that the made-up cities and landmarks are in some country--well, what if it's in a made-up country? Then the whole thing would kind of be intellectually bankrupt.

the reason why snicket doesnt tell us where the books take place is to make us annoyed and to mak us think!! and also because its in a made up country like genovia except there is no name for the country because of what i jsut said!!!!!!

How about Canada? It's close to lakes and Mountains, and i think they use Farenheit. So it must be in Canada.

... the whole thing would kind of be intellectually bankrupt. Or you can see it as an attempt to be local to every reader.
