Daniel Handler can use anagrams. For example Lake Lachrymose, can be an anagram for something else. I'm just taking a guess. Lol.

I read somewhere in the book that they used Dollars Dollars are only used in Three places(I think) America, Australia and Singapur Down here in Australia we don't use Farenheit, and we use MEtric America uses Farenheit, so I think its america and I doubt its singapur, (Does it have snowy mountains there) and there arent bears in Australia So i recon its America

Lachrymose means "tearful". It isn't an anagram.

Singapore is really British and they use English and all that, but isn't Singapore supposed to be really clean, which differs from the description "the heart of a dirty city" in TBB?

You people are just ruining the fun of the series.I think one of its pros is that it takes place nowhere and everywhere and that is one of the reasons i love it....

We've only adopted Eurocents recently. The series probably occurs before 1997, when they were, I think, introduced.

Yeah they were actually introduced in 2002 so you are probably right.

For clarifycation: Canada does not use Farienheight, and they use the metric system. And England does not use cents as there currency. They would have used pound if it were in 1906 or whatever, like some of you said. If it was now it would be Euro.
