More vernacularly, my crazy idea of when the series takes place. Last summer, I entertained the notion that the series took place in some evil future. VFD had kept the world quiet for years, but the schism threw everything into discord and things just plain went downhill. It could be the future, or an alternate universe. Criticism accepted, if it's reasonably constructive.

Exactly. The thing is, it really doesn't have a location. I'm not going to criticize you! You did fine. I think it takes place in the past, future, and present, and everywhere, but nowhere at the same time.

She's talking about a certain time not place.... I agree with Tocuna, as it seems that these things make sense....

He said that if a series lasted long enough and there was many defined things, that it popped into existence in an alternate universe. Some examples: The Wizard of Oz, The John Carter of Mars Series, and so on and so forth. Yeah, if it popped into existence somewhere, I better be recruited as a librarian.

I wish that one page had never written anything about a lack of definite time/place, because after that, whenever anyone suggests anything about a time/place, everyone instantly rejects it. Let's look at this, Tocuna: I think there are too many technological inconsistencies for it to take place at any time in our world. Despite having elevators and self-sustaining hot air balloons, they seem not to have much by the way of technology. No mention of television, the internet, etc. (unless you count Nero's advanced computer system) I can see why he'd keep it out, after all, the Baudelaires are pretty cultured and wouldn't be glued in front of a computer all their lives anyway (ahem. oh crap), but they seem to do a lot of things the old fashioned way... Maybe they're mennonites or something. HEY! Mennonites live with limited technology! But there's no mention of the outside world, so that's an obvious joke-theory. And plus, everyone else seems to live in the same little bubble of technology-less-ness-less-ness. And they wear old-fashion costume (at least in the illustrations and the movie)? WACKY! So by saying they live in no-definite time/place, you guys are all pretty much saying that they DO live in an alternative universe. A universe in which technology has taken a different course, and so have the lives of the people living in the world. Not somewhere in our world, but somewhere where the beginning was perhaps the same, but the end may be different. Of course, to accept that, you have to basically accept that for every little thing any one person does, there's a universe in which they did something ever so slightly different. So there's an infinite number of universes popping up with the slightest motion of your hand. But that's Quantum Physics or some such nonsense, so we won't get into that. BUT, if you accept that there are alternative universes, then Tocuna's theory is just another way of saying what you've been using to oppose her all along: "It isn't part of a definite time/place in our world". Everywhere and nowhere? That doesn't mean anything. The fact that Daniel Handler describes it as a place means it exists SOMEWHERE, if only as an imaginary little world. I can see what you're getting at with that statement, but "everywhere and nowhere" doesn't really bring anything to light, does it? It just sounds "mysterious and wise".

Neggie- I like all your points. But to quote them to show how much I like them would take up too much space, in my opinion. Not that it matters how much space I take up.
I also noticed that there are some technology issues. Like the Self-Sustaining Hot Air Ballon, Violet's inventions, Nero's computer, but you never hear about TV for news, it's the Daily Punctillio, or a computer or the Internet. Where it takes place (if on this Earth), who knows? When it takes place, who knows? But hey, it's a book series, and it's interesting. Time and place are not needed.
Yeah, I agree with that.

Glad to know I'm not completely off my rocker, then.
I think it being historically inacurrate (at least for a time of this earth) is one of the things that makes it better. We can suspend our disbelief, and it's actually nice to have a little universe that doesn't fit right in to ours. It's a world built by imagination, ruled by invention and strung together by a series of unfortunate events.
Oh wait. I was accidentally quoting. Carp.
