Jerome was the one who "supposedly" ruled out Europe for a place for the Bs to live
He said that: Galileo was from a country in Europe.

Well, if you lived in Europe, would you refer to a country in the same continent as "a country in Europe"? You'd more likely call it by its name, in this case Italy.

yeah, it has to be a fictional place. Dont u have to have permission or something to use a specific place in a book?

i am from england (europe) and i still say things like " are we going to europe on holiday" or "somewhere in Europe" things like that! we brits make up our own continent all by ourselves!!! but i think the books takes place somewhere totally ficticious (sp) or somewhere loosly based on everywhere like deserts from middle east, lakes from canada and others...

I'm from Europe, but I'd say "I'm going to France/Italy/etc.". Although I'd say the name of the country no matter what the continent, so it doesn't matter.
Would you need permission to quote poems from long-dead authors, or make sneaky references to other authors? I'm just asking in case I ever write a book.

That would be good to know, but I don't think so. I don't know much about copyright laws, but I think you can quote a long-dead poet without paying. The same goes for sneaky allusions.

Like having a minor character called Mr. Handler, and having another character say to him, "I didn't realise this was a sad occasion.".
