I was just wondering, knowing that this topic has probably been discussed but I couldn't find it, what time period do the books take place? The outfits and cars look older, but it's never really stated. Does that mean that Lemony is looking back much further than we assume? I'm just salightly at a lost.

This HAS been talked to death. I also think it is usually done in Perilous Places... or something. I dunno. On the one hand we have old fashioned clothing and carriages, on the other hand we have "advanced" computers, telephones, and other such modern stuff. I imagine it to be roughly 20 or so years ago... Maybe the Baudelaires live in a half-Amish country, which would explain the carriages. OMG!!!! I just thought of a great theory. (Wanders to other "time" threads)

Although Perilous Places isn't technically the place for this, neither is the Crisis Concludes. Threads about time, though, have accompanied the threads about where for some time now, so I'll move this to Perilous Places.
Edit: Well, actually, it was in Sardonic Series, not the Crisis Concludes. But I've moved it now, plus the other reasons.

Amish people don't live in cities. Not even half-Amish people. ( ) If you want proof that there is no specific era, try where in the first few pages of TBB, during the Baudelaires' car ride to meet Olaf, they encounter horse-drawn carriages and motorcycles on Doldrum Drive. Of course, this is also a great allusion to The Phantom Tollbooth, one of the greatest books of all time.

It just irks me because he never mentions what year it is, or gives any hints to what time period it is. Maybe there really is no time period and its just made to suit the books?

So we're looking for a time period with computers, cool twenties outfits, and a King Of Arizona. Better put your thinking caps on.

So we're looking for a time period with computers, cool twenties outfits, and a King Of Arizona. Better put your thinking caps on. It could be some sort of bizarre future, after modern society has been destroyed by some catastrophe and rebuilt from the remnants. However, I doubt that Handler intended it as such; although the above theory could be used as fanfic inspiration.

That's the kind of idea I was thinking. The whole future thing... but yeah, really unlikely. But it's interesting to think about.

I doubt it would be as early as the 1940s but it might be close to that. I would say somewhere between the 60s and 80s.

I also noticed that in TAA the school has an advanced computer, and then Mr. Poe says something like: "I'll call the police, and they'll catch Olaf, they also have an advanced computer." That makes it sound rather rare, so it couldn't be today. I say about ten to twenty years ago. But that still doesn't explain the horse carts and such... I doubt we shall ever get to the bottom of this...
