I would have guessed that it would be PG-13. I just hope they didn't tone it down so much that it's going to be some disney-like kiddie flick.I mean come on, that would be complete injustice. Oh, well, let's just hope for the best.

Because my philosophy is that if you add violence to anything, it makes it better.
Plus, there's a lot of not-for-children stuff in book one. Olaf hits Klaus, Sunny gets hung up in a tower window, and both Olaf AND Flacutono start getting all touchy-feely with Violet, among other things. Plus the general atmosphere of the entire thing is really creepy. And wonderful.

Olaf and Flacutoto get touchy feely.... Eugh , I guess you're right and the whole Knee/Knife thing in TRR isn't going to lower the rating exactly eh?

I was hoping that it would be [glow=green,2,300]PG-13[/glow]; if the PG rating is true, that implies that they removed Olaf's swearing. Can you say "damn" and "blasted furnaces of hell" in a PG movie? Can I say those words here? If not, sorry. I suspected that the Snicket movie would be PG-13 for "violence, language, children in peril, and thematic elements". The milder rating makes me think that the film may be, well, milder. Less faithful to the story and with less thematic elements. Lemony's books have many thematic elements.

Hahahaha, if they made Olaf go "billions of blue blistering barnacles!" instead I'd crack up in the theater. And I'd be the only person who would get it probably.
But Olaf's swearing is good and they should keep it in. Lemony put like a zillion disclaimers around his swearing in RR anyway, so what could the harm be? And yeah, I was hoping for a PG-13 rating too; it'd lower the potential audience, but it would have a higher chance of the movie being more faithful to the books.

I REALLY hoped that it would be PG-13. If they make it PG, it will probably be toned down. They might think that since it is a movie about kids, it should be a "kid" movie. It shouldn't. I mean School of Rock is about kids [5th graders? I think...] and it got away with a PG-13 rating. I hoped they would do that with ASoUE.

I know the feeling, Anna. I'm scarcely allowed to see PG-13 movies, or at least I was a while ago. I haven't been to the movies much at all lately. If "PGish" means "All nice and clean and relatively non-violent with not many thematic elements" it's very bad. However, some PG movies got away with a lot. Have you seen the Grinch? It should have been PG-13, but for entirely different reasons than the Snicket movie. Maybe the Snicket film will be a "borderline PG", on the upper border that is.

I would really like it if in the area under the rating where it usually says something like: low level violence, it should have a Snicket thing like: low level violence, low level coarse language, nasty phone calls and atrocious manners. Or other things that Olaf is accused of. Also arson could be used.

Everything gets toned down so kiddies will be able to see it.. happened with Harry Potter, will probably happen with Gossip Girl.

The producers are shooting for a PG rating so everyone can enjoy it. Of course, my insider said they are jsut on teh edge of that rating (meanign it hasnt been toned down so much as to say it hurts to see all the pretty colors or anything).
And Ive been told that most of the things Carrey said in improv lines and stuff is stricly R rated, so I hope they will have some of that on the DVD, but its a bit early to be thinking about that.

Not to be too contrary but PG is not as "childish" as some people believe. Words like 'damn' can be used, a level of violence is permited, and soft adult themes can come into play. The books are PG in my opinion. Yes, they are dark but that doesn't neccisarily mean unsuitable for children (the books are in the children's section of many bookstores after all), and even though I don't think all children would have the attention span for the series, I do believe that many kids at the PG level can appricate the dark humor and storyline of the series. For fans of the series I would hope you had more faith in the amount 'mere children' can understand.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about the conotaion of the rating. Directors rarely pick a rating and conform the movie to it (hense the "this film has not yet been rated" message on some trailers). It'll be the content (and how carefully the story is kept to) that will sink or float this.
...and that's quite a peculiar philosophy Madamluna. heh.. o.o;;
