That's what Esme said to explain away the dissapearance of the previous Chief of Police, in Chapter 2 of The Vile Village. Because of the unlikelihood of thumbtack ingestion happening truly on accident, I believe that Esme in fact murdered him, but thumbtacks may have been involved there. It seems that Olaf and Co. are always willing to kill to get a job.
However, it's more interesting to note that in The Hostile Hospital, someone mentioned "The Accidentally-Swallowed-Something-You-Shouldn't-Have Ward." Is anyone else a big enough geek to notice that minor connection? Was the police chief in fact in that ward, and would it be remotely noteworthy if he was?

That's an interesting observation. Yes, I am a nerd and geek, look at my other threads, though both of you have gone there, I mean, I think I was a major geek noticing those things. It is a possibility, a pretty good possibility, that that person is in that ward.

Tocuna, that's so cool!
Also note that in The Gashlycrumb Tinies, L is for Leo who swallowed some tacks. I know this may have no connection whatsoever, but I also know that Edward Gorey was a bit on an inspiration for Dan Han, so...

Let's call the police cheif Leo. It would also be interesting to look for other Gorey references in Snicket's work.

He might be in the sore throat ward. Swallowing tacks will definitely hurt your throat.

DOn't you like the way Count Olaf and his troop say how they got rid you someone. "Babs is now a stuntwoman and has preceded throwing herself off of buildings immediatly."

It's remotely possible that he'll kill some of his henchfolks if they desert or betray him, but Olaf understands the value of loyal(if stupid) employees.

And he also just doesn't care sometimes about them because when they're dying, he usually leaves them behind because he has to escape, or get away fast all the time.

My theories. 1) There is a conscious link by LS between the two. 2) It's not important, just there to see how smart the readers are. 3) That is possibly an Edward Gorey reference, 'cause we all know how much Mister Handler loves those text-to-text links.
