In "The Hostile Hospital", Handler put something in there that he could have left out: (I know it's not word-for-word but I'm doing the best I can.) "I fell as if my whole life has been nothing but a dismal play, presented just for someone else's amusment, and that the playwright who invented my cruel twist of fate is somewhere far above me, laughing and laughing at his creation."
Just tell me what you think about that.

It's a "Watch Your Mouth" reference I believe...
And, it did have a purpose. It was a sort of metaphor to help the readers understand how Sunny, Klaus (and Violet? Was she in this part? I'll have to check...) felt whilst Olaf was laughing above them, over the intercom.

Well, I know that. He wouldn't put that in there for nothing. ( And if I wasn't offended, I would say it was pretty good.) But all I'm saying is, he could have used something different than that. Like: "I feel as if my whole life has been nothing but a bowl of Jell-O, just waiting for someone to come and gobble me up,and the evil chef who concocted this cruel twist of blob, is somewhere far above me, laughing and laughing at his creation."
Now that sounds more Snicket.

And don't tell me I'm an idiot. I know.

"I fell as if my whole life has been nothing but a dismal play, presented just for someone else's amusment, and that the playwright who invented my cruel twist of fate is somewhere far above me, laughing and laughing at his creation." I rather liked that metaphor, and it was appropriate because of the laughing intercom high above the Baudelaires. Olaf was (symbolically) looking down at the miserable scene he had caused, like a laughing, cruel god. Aye, what did you find upsetting about it? Violet was in that part, but she was unconcious.

I didn't like it. It's been used before, I think. It was a little...trite, or summat.

Here we are questioning whether or not Lemony Snicket is real, and we came along this laughing God line (whether it be trite or not, it fit perfectly) and we understand Lemony is a character just like Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Lemony isn't the one determining fate in the story instead he's just there to record the events of the laughing God who is ultimately in charge of the entire ASOUE series (Daniel Handler). Wow, that's a great observation.

The laughing God? Leave out the laughing God? NO WAY. To me not only does the laughing God parallel whole the Baudelaires feel in regards to Mattahias but it parallels the whole Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler "who is the real author" relationship. Here we are questioning whether or not Lemony Snicket is real, and we came along this laughing God line (whether it be trite or not, it fit perfectly) and we understand Lemony is a character just like Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Lemony isn't the one determining fate in the story instead he's just there to record the events of the laughing God who is ultimately in charge of the entire ASOUE series (Daniel Handler). Plus it brings us back to the elements found in Greek Literature, and even though it kind-of contradicts the idea of an active audience it gives us a sense of being part of the story in spite of the fact that Daniel is reminding us this is just a tale (not real life). 667 was so cold without you ;_;

...And if I wasn't offended... I'm curious, what part of it were you offended about? Because I really can't see anything offensive in that, myself. I'm not saying you're wrong, mind, I'm just saying I'm having trouble seeing it from your perspective, and would like to.

I personally really like that quote, perhaps because half the time I feel like my life and such has been like that.
But hey, that's just me...

I agree with what Swans said. Daniel has put the Bauds in this situation, and (although he most likely isn't laughing at them) I also feel the same, cos Handler is really evil and I imagine him reading these posts and laughing at us (hence laughing god)
