So I did a search for "row, row, row" and "earliest" and found the following web page, www.csufresno.edu/folklore/ballads/FSWB412C.html, which says that the first written version of the song is from 1852 with a different tune[/i]. The tune we know was first written down in 1881 with credit to Eliphalet Oram Lyte. I'm also happy that the web site cited the alternate version with the lyric "Throw your teacher overboard". Almost made we want to sing "Jingle bells, Batman smells". Almost.
