It is intentionally confusing, what with the "The man said, the diary began, the letter continued." I've tried to sort if out, but keep on getting confused. Does anyone know exactly what happened in the manuscript in the diary in the story in the letter in the introduction to the book?

Oops, I always thought that that thread was about the VFD meeting transcript. Well, it hasn't been bumped for months anyway. Maybe listing exactly who did what in the intro would help.

"It is well known that one of the easiest ways to avoid attention of one's enemies is to concoct a long, false tale..."
This is one of the things that pops out at me (although I love how the speaker -not quite sure who it is- then goes on into a long, possibly false, tale about their aunt who gave them a key)
And for the record, I am still confused. I will work on making a list of who is speaking.

Yeah, if we could get a whole bunch of us to write lists, then compare them, we'd be less confused. Or maybe more... we could try it, anyway.
