Or was that jst an act .... Since there was another Volunteer just a few metres away, then I suspect not.

Fair point, but I've never said him to be a knowing ally of Olaf. I'm of the opinion that he and his sister have something to hide, which may or may not be related to V.F.D., and given my current attitude to Poe after Chapter Thirteen of TGG, if it is related to V.F.D., then he doesn't know it. If it's V.F.D.-related, then he probably thinks that he's doing a favour for an old friend, who is actually a Volunteer, and if that is correct, then I'd say he's being manipulated by the fire-starting side of the schism.
Just because I think that he has something under his hat doesn't mean that I think that he's a villain. Not every bad person in the series is a Volunteer.
Edit: I wonder what Baudelaire_Fantasy said before she deleted her post.

The fact that Poe claims to assume that J.S. is Geraldine Julienne implicates him in...something. Either he's stupid, he's pretending to be stupid, or he knows something we don't...but further, I am unwilling at once to go. But I broadly agree with Signor FightFireWithFire.

It's worth noting that "Geraldine" is pronounced with a soft G, so one who hadn't seen it written down would think it began with J. But how to explain the S? Her maiden name(assuming she's married)? An alias? A typo?

I wish to categorically state that if Mr Poe is an idiot, so am I. I'm sure that banker is acting in his own interests...perhaps as ransom for his sister...perhaps to further the aims of the laissez-faire faction. In doing this, however, he is unwittingly (?) being made a tool of the arsonist faction.
Methinks.

Although I would extend the "unwittingly" to include most of his actions... I honestly do believe that he's being completely tricked. The item under his hat, he probably thought he was looking after for an old friend. It's probably similar with You-Know-Who... But we've disagreed on this issue before, Ennui, so I don't expect you to change your mind.

It's even been speculated that Mr. Poe is a volunteer - although I think that "was" would be more appropriate. But yes, it's interesting, and it's also one of the clues in the series that I won't touch because I don't have a clue what it means. But, as I've said many times, we know that the two Poe siblings are up to something, what with the evidence you just stated and the Bad Beginning Rare Edition note that pretty much says that he had something under his hat when he met the Baudelaires on Briny Beach.
