Whee! I was wondering when you would update this.
I can play backgammon, the result of too many boring, rainy holidays to France. We have a glass backgammon set but I'm not allowed near it as I'm too clumsy.
I like the way that when Dante is finally cheering up a bit things go wrong.

CHAPTER SIX CONTINUED
Think you that I forgot the plight of the heroic buccaneers still within the Sixth-Sixth-Seventh Serenity, who even now attempted to pad subtly past the black panther on Am-Ber's bed?
They were, naturally, unsuccessful. The vast feline opened both its eyes, leapt off the bed, and began to rub against Ennui's ankle, purring loudly. This awoke its mistress. Thinking speedily, Ennui ducked behind the panther's bulk, stroking it affectionately; and so it was that Am-Ber only noticed Akbar.
Both pirate and Ninja were unarmed; and in such a contest, however expert he may be, the pirate is unlikely to prevail. Am-Ber picked up Akbar and casually tied him in a double bow, despite the outlandish curses he poured at her. Meanwhile, Ennui crept towards the corner of the bedroom, where Am-Ber's katana stood, and eased it from its sheath. The panther did not impede him; it lay on its back, purring and hoping that someone would tickle its tummy.
However, as he approached Am-Ber, who was still decoratively rearranging Akbar, he found he could not strike. The Ninja's hair poured down in a fountain, and he knew that, were he to see the eyes, he would have even less stomach for fighting. He replaced the katana with a sound of metal on metal that caused Am-Ber to turn.
"You!"
"Me," Ennui admitted. "In the flesh, yeargh, fair maiden. Slay me if ye will, but what good it'll do ye I cannot tell, for I be already near dead for love, yeargh..."
Am-Ber stared at the ceiling, attempting to suppress laughter, but failed.
"The ways you try to weasel out of punishment, pirate..."
"Nay, lass, tis true!" Ennui cried urgently. "Accept my plight and scorn me not, argh, and I will be your sword against the world. We'll take ship together and gather whole beaches of riches..."
Am-Ber looked faintly moved.
"We Ninjas do not care for treasure. There is a deeper meaning to life."
"What's that, then?" queried Ennui.
Am-ber paused for thought. "I can't remember. Probably killing people."
"Killing people?" Ennui answered with a grin. "Why, argh, tis my speciality. I single-handedly stormed the brig Arabel. I took Cawnpore alone, without cannon..."
"Actually," Akbar growled from his prone position, "that was me."
"True, true," Ennui said, his eyebrows contorting as he mentally writhed. "But we're so close, and er, argh, fraternal, that your achievements are my achievements. And vice versa."
Akbar's cold stare did not diminish. But Am-Ber smiled charmingly.
"If I join you," she said, "what do you intend to do?"
"Explore," Akbar suggested.
"Pillage," Ennui amended.
"Murder lots and lots of people purely for the fun of it," both said together.
"And then," Ennui finished, "there be the affair o' the heart, aye."
Am-Ber knelt to the ground and held Ennui close in an embrace. Then she started to unravel Akbar.
It was the beginning of a new era. The most deadly association to be declared on the Island of 667 since Admiral Kobolos' landing had been made.

How intriguing! Like Romeo and Juliet, but with Pirates and Ninjas. And Ennui, no matter how Ninja-ey I am, if there's gold to be found, I'll be the one stealing it.

I like the debate about the deeper meaning of life--treasure or killing? Could these two star-crossed lovers create a truce between the warring factions of pirates and ninjas?

The key to uniting treasure and murder is, I imagine, murdering in order to get treasure. But then again, I am neither ninja nor pirate.
Everyone's already taken the Romeo and Juliet allusions, so a more plain compliment from me is in order. Write more, er.

Or you could get the treasure, and murder with it.
I love it, and you.

Bravissimo! This is just...superlative! It's certainly the best thing I've read since I came back. I love the way you've portrayed everyone and I look forward to more once you return. Enjoy Italy, even though it's boiling hot at this time of year. At least, it was when I left, which wasn't too long ago.

Ennui, I don't care if you're on holiday to the moon, finish this, or face the wrath of a Peej Unleashed. *rolls up sleeves*

Moon calling. What an archaeologist you are, PJ. I'll do my best; I'm currently occupied preparing to put my Book 12 theses into words, and after that there's fanfiction...but...we'll see.
