M: I think it shouldn't be a big deal. She's a lesbian--so what? He shouldn't have mentioned her, but it shouldn't be a big deal either.

Should I call and ask?

I don't remember that part terribly well... my mom and I were talking during it. I think if I was Cheney's daughter (Heaven forbid), I might feel somewhat offended... Kerry talking about her and how he disagrees with gay marriage in the same breath. I don't think it should be that much of a big deal, though... if he'd picked anyone to talk about, someone would've felt a little bit offended.

From the PWOT Newskim LESBIAN CRISIS HEATS UP... ...As the Cheneys condemn John Kerry's remarks in the last Presidential debate about their daughter and noted lesbian Mary Cheney. When the moderator asked what the candidates planned to do about gay marriage, Kerry replied, "I believe in the right of every American to live however they choose—[cough]Cheney's daughter's a lesbo[cough]—Excuse me." Lynne Cheney called an emergency press conference after the debate to announce, "As a mother, I am appalled at John Kerry's insensitivity to the desire deep in every woman for at least a taste of the plump fruits of another. He is the one who is gay." Kerry campaign spokesmen contended, "No, they're gay." Analysts believe the controversy is the result of the increasing acceptance of gays in society. Gay beatings are at record lows. "The first step is the bickering," says gay researcher Amy Buggert, "but soon we will see gay people entering politics with new confidence. If you thought we'd seen gay before, you were wrong." Buggert predicts an all-gay government by 2015. Until then, the bitter debate will continue, with either side attacking the other's gay actions, and justifying its own. And it might get worse, with rumors circulating the web that John Kerry's daughter Vanessa is asexual. The Kerry campaign dismissed the rumor as "gay," but it could become a wildcard in the campaigns. Asexuals have made less progress than any other minority in America. They are fewer in number than gays, yet they receive more than ten times the number of beatings. While the Nation and media have shown outstanding maturity in gay issues, the future for less gay minorities is uncertain.
