Olaf is creepy anyway. This statement just confirms the previous sentence once more.I think that Olaf prefers to have a pretty inventor than an'' annoying '' bookeater or a ''stupid'' monkey that speaks nonsense all the time as he says...

Violaf pairing always annoyed me. BTW, had he ever said that Sunny is a monkey in books?

I don't think so - I think that one was exclusive to the movie - but I could be wrong.

I am not sure either...I just remember him in the movie saying the following quotes.. ''Sory I don't speak monkey..'' ''And then I'll be arrested and sent to jail, and you'll live happily ever after with a friendly guardian, spending your time inventing things and reading books and sharpening your little monkey teeth...

''And then I'll be arrested and sent to jail, and you'll live happily ever after with a friendly guardian, spending your time inventing things and reading books and sharpening your little monkey teeth... Silly, silly Russian translators! They skipped the word " monkey " in this quote! BTW, I don't remember Olaf calling Sunny "monkey", the same like I can't remember the phase "There is always something!" said by Violet in CANON.

I'm fairly sure they're both inventions by the movie's scriptwriter. Although "There is always something" is a generic enough statement that I wouldn't be surprised to find something like it in the books either.

In the 9th book the carnivorous carnival in the book it says ""I myself hope it's Violet," Olaf said "She's the prettiest"" what im wondering is how in the world Violet didn't think that was creepy. I mean hes an old man with a girlfriend who is calling Violet pretty? i mean if i was Violet i would be creeped out myself. What about you guys? I suppose after Count Olaf had mentioned his thoughts on her numerous times she had grown accustomed to his creepiness. I mean its no secret he has a thing for her, she obviously thinks its creepy but feels it would be pointless to bring it up considering everyone and their grandmother knows its creepy.

I'm almost positive thare's no "monkey" thing in the books. And say that a person is pretty, doesn't mean you love her, or feel something for her. I don't think Olaf likes her, but if she's peretty, and we know Violet are, I don't think it's a problem he calls her beutiful. He's not blind, after all!

I think people consider the large age difference between them to be problematic, especially given Olaf's attempt to marry her in TBB, which, it was implied, wasn't solely for her money.

I think its less the age difference and more the fact that Violet is under 18. As for age we really don't know how old Olaf is, I mean it seems as if he was the same age as the Baudelaire parents and they weren't really that old either.

wasn't solely for her money. I think it was solely for her money, because he was planning to kill her after the marriage.

As much as I'd like to believe it was solely the money he did notice her looks pretty often. Also we don't know for sure that he would have killed her after the marriage (Although I think he did mention it), but I believe he conveyed to her that if she did this willingly he might let her live (And in the other books when he needed at least one orphan to live he generally remarked about Violet), but I don't particularly feel like looking that up right now to confirm.

One particularly striking passage is where the Hook Handed Man says 'It's all right, boss, I know she's yours'.
Although if you do the sums Olaf can't be much more than forty (though he comes over as older, presumably aged by villainy), that's still old enough to be Violet's father. I think it's a combination of the age-difference and her being under-age; either without the other wouldn't be quite so disturbing.
