Freebird and I are both in a very time-specific fandom, called Back to the Future - so I think, for us, it only comes natural to want to pinpoint the events down to a specific year. I mean, especially if we ever want to do ASOUE/BTTF crossovers. We know that the concept of years does exist in the ASOUE Universe, even if Daniel Handler never tells us which one. Mine starts in the year 1981, while his starts in the year 1974.

Well canonically the Baudelaires are of Jewish decent, as well as Count Olaf.
In my ficverse, Bertrand and Beatrice's families are French Jews from Paris who immigrate to America.
Violet and Klaus grew up during the events of World War II (1939-1945), well aware of the political and religious persecution in their community. Bertrand and Beatrice encouraged their children not to be discouraged by this and not to let others discriminate against them.
Count Olaf was born in Stockholm, Sweden (Scandinavia), his parents fled their country due to antisemitism. Olaf is has lived through both world wars and is all to familiar with prejudice and racism in the mid 20th century. He often hides the fact that he's Jewish from others.
Many volunteers (including Thursday) went to fight in WWII using their skills to fight the Axis Powers. Ishmael being 98 years old, uses fear mongering to prompt the Islanders to keep them from leaving. Ishmael is Jewish too.
The Quagmires are close family friends of the Baudelaires and supporters of civil rights movements.
Hector is Hispanic, the elders of the Village of Fowl Devotees have old world views on him. Not considering him a member of the community.
Sir is half Native American on his mother's side. Something he keeps private.
Charles and Jerome's relationship is secret during the time period due to homophobia and gay marriage being illegal.
Phil is African American.
The Volunteers Fighting Diseases are early version of hippies.

I depict the series as being in an alternate universe that resembles the 20s with some things from later decades thrown in. Racism, sexism, and homophobia still exist but are more fringe movements.
