Since ASOUE takes place in an alternate retro-universe, I'm sure the culture would be different from our world.
How is the culture different from ours in your ficverse?

I mostly depict the Series as either in the Fifties, or in the present day, albeit in a cultural stasis.
It does depend on what I'm writing, as stated above, like in my Bioshock fic, which was set in 1969, along with some pop culture references from that decade, plus some of my own, some in the form of inside jokes and made-up stuff to spice things up a bit.

Yeah, the year/decade usually depends the story I'm writing, too. For example, the oldest set of characters (Olaf's parents) in my ficverse were born in 1928. I'm also in the process of creating some new characters who are preferably older, so if I play my cards right my ficverse will end up dating back to the 1870s or before.
Generally, my fics take place anywhere from the 1980s to the early 21st century and, on a few occasions, further in the future.

I don't really have anything set in stone yet. In my ficverse, racism and sexism has never been too much of a problem. They still existed, though.

I like the idea of racism and sexism - and possibly even homophobia - not being as big of an issue in the ASOUE Universe. Of course, though, there always will be bigoted types. Maybe orphan-o-phobia is a bigger issue, though. Or maybe that's just Prufrock.

Yes, homophobia wasn't much of an issue either.

I'm thinking that the Vietnam War - and, thus, the hippie movement - would still exist. The main focus would be on global peace, though - and not so much on fighting prejudice.
I know some here set the series in the early part of the 20th Century, and it's already evident from the books that sexism is not really an issue. Otherwise, Esme could have used the fact that she was a female banker to make her position seem more important. So, if you go that route, that would be one cultural difference right there.

Some rock songs would have never been written if it hadn't been for the Vietnam War.

Right, exactly. I see no reason for Over the Hills and Far Away to not get written. Lyrically, the song can be relevant to any time.
I think the books did mention a World War One, not necessary by that name - but I don't remember if there was a mention of World War Two. I think the Vietnam War had nothing to do with World war Two, though.

I'm thinking of maybe having the US win the Vietnam War and have the Cold War end earlier. Maybe have the draft end eariler too. I still need to mull over this, though.

That's a good idea. I still need to think this over, myself. I just realized, if Family Ties still exists in the ASOUE Universe, would Alex P Keaton be different?

I wouldn't think so.

Yeah, probably not - and I did establish that Ronald Reagan was still the US President by 1985.

If sexism isn't much of an issue, Alex may be a little different. Or maybe not. Maybe he would still be a sexist.
I think World War Two played an important role in how America is post-1945.

One of the few racist issues in my ficverse concerns Hector in World War II, where he was sentenced to Auschwitz while in France. However, this incident is non-canon with my ficverse.
In the new letter I'll post in my "Compilations" thread, wihch is mostly canon, a Senator is mentioned.
If I had to choose a time period for my ficverse, it would be in the later half of the 20th century. However, I'm not going to be using a time period for cultural or technological references, much like Snicket did with the actual series.
