I think that Madame Lulu. She wanted to help Baudelaire. The only reason why she didn't do it was her stupid motor. She seems to be very kind and carrying but very careless woman. Freaks wanted Baudelaires to die. Don't get me wrong, they are interesting characters and I don't hate them! I don't put blame on them. They were very unlucky and they had a hard life but Madame Lulu is more kind than them as for me. What is your opinion? Remember, we talk only about person who was the friendliest and most kind in your opinion and not who is funniest or the most interesting! We talk about kindness and friendliness!

Hugo was actually very kind and welcoming to the Baudelaires throughout the book, to my recollection. It's harder to justify Olivia's failings, I think.

Hugo was kind? I disagree! He was carrying only about himself. He didn't try to help Violet and Klaus when he heard that they will be pushed in the lion pit. He saw them worrying but he didn't say them, " What's the matter? Can I help you?" Maybe I forgot the plot but I can't remember him doing something good. Perhaps, my memory is no good. Dante, remind me please, which he did were good?

He saw them worrying but he didn't say them, " What's the matter? Can I help you?" But neither did anyone else, including Madame Lulu. It's everyone who's at fault there. It's somewhat ironic, too, that Hugo might be considered the friendliest of the freaks, since he's the only one of them with an actual physical hinderance (as opposed to having what some might consider a talent, as Colette and Kevin do).

Just have a skim through TCC. Hugo generally tries to be welcoming, to mediate, to prevent disputes from arising. He's always very polite and doesn't even bemoan his situation, unlike Colette and Kevin.

Hugo is not polite, though. In TSS he was very, very rude and very, very aggressive. He was much ruder and much more aggressive than all other member of theatre troupe. He called Sunny "a freak" and charged her every time. Colette and Kevin didn't touch Sunny. Stupid Colette just asked about "raw toasts" and Kevin didn't say anything bad about Sunny at all. He seemed be the nicest then but when I read the end of TCC, I became thinking he is the most villainous freak. I think Hugo is as evil as Kevin is and Colette is a bit less villainous.

I just looked through TSS and none of what you said about Hugo is true. What is true is that he seems the most willing to go along with his new situation as a member of Olaf's troupe, but he was also the most comfortable and professional about being a carnival freak.

Reread the chapter 6 in TSS and you will see how "polite" Hugo was.

The kindest person is not Olivia. Yes, yes, in the end she tryed to help them. But she helped Count Olaf until then and she did not do as she promissed. She told Count Olaf the Baudelaires were disguisd and it was because of her that Count Olaf tryed to kill Violet and Klaus at the end of the book.

So, why did you vote for her?

Yeah, I know, for one second there I forgot that Olivia told Count Olaf the Baudelaires were disguised. I´ll change my vote

If you could change your vote, then, who else would you vote for? (Also, where are you up to now in your reading?)

I guess I would also vote for Hugo. He is very polite (at least in this book) and he joined the theater troupe because he really had no choice and he was truly apreciated there. But we actually don't see much kindness in the canival st all :\. P.S.: I'm sorry, I forgot to change my signature, I'm now in the begging of the Slippery Slope, and because my birthday was yesterday, I got The End as a gift ! I can't wait to read so I gotta read TSS, TGG and TPP!

He said, " This baby is a real carnival freak!" AND HE IS POLITE AFTER THIS? Lulu didn't call Baudelaires with bad words, at least.

Are you referring to the line that reads: "You should be very proud of yourself ... if you weren't a freak, Chabo, you could grow up to be an excellent chef." Or: At first I thought it was some freaky wolf recipe, but it's actually quite tasty."? These are the closest remarks I could find to the one you cited, and you'll notice they're actually rather friendly in context.
