it definitely seems out of their ballparks for both of them, but I'd speculate it was Benny's idea (I understand the brothers' 2009 film "Daddy Longlegs" is also magical realist).
for me it was a double-edged sword, because i enjoyed the finale a lot, but was disappointed how it left a lot of loose ends, making many things built up throughout the show irrelevant. (just as one small example, the creepy guy who said "rape" and then pretend he said "grape" in one episode - utterly discardable and weird for the sake of being weird. or the opening of the penultimate episode, i think, where Whitney is followed by a mysterious truck. There's many such instances, and they are not interesting in themselves if they never lead to anything.)

yes, i think the series was too long overall, because of all those puzzling and/or uncomfortable scenes that basically stood on their own. most of the plotlines with Dougie seemed to be of this nature. maybe they were just riding the bad vibes for their own sake, but the "eerie" music that played over most scenes suggested that were was a "mystery" being built. in the moment, though, it was always funny. like the "loose chicken" in the bathroom 😂

Guys, The Outlaws is such a good comfort watch Tv show. Thoroughly British crime-comedy (but not the Guy Ritchie-type) co-created by Stephen Merchant, and it has Christopher Walken in it?? yes please

weird, I watched the first ep and thought it was horrendous. looked like ass, brutally awkward pacing, cringeworthy ‘topical’ characters (the guy who instantly let us know he was anti-woke or whatever), depressingly rehashed jokes from old Smerch, and then Walken doing what looked like a third-rate Walken impression (with no explanation of how/if he was supposed to be british??)

Walken's character is not supposed to be a Brit, it does get addressed. It looks normal for BBC shows of that genre like Mifits or Skins (from what I've seen), the look is not a priority there. I disagree about the pacing, and I agree the characters come across as rough and flat in the first ep, but they get fleshed out with each episode, that's actually one of the better elements of the show considering it's comedy first and drama second.

when something looks that miserable, though, it oozes unfunniness all over the scene, and it makes you question your life decisions for every additional second that you have to put your peepers on it.
the humor and pacing actually reminded me a bit of the netflix asoue, if i remember correctly.

I have to revise my last comment in that it becomes drama first and comedy second for the final two ep's of the first season. I found the change mostly well-done, with some neat suspense.
If you don't find the humor funny then I guess I'd advise against watching it, but I found it pretty far off from Netflix ASoUE, and closer to something like Stath Lets Flats, which is another underrated Brit-com.

Neither Misfits or Skins are BBC shows, though i do think they influfenced the style of a lot of BBC stuff since.
