That's what makes it such a mystery. We can come up with partially plausible solutions, but without total information we can't come to a conclusion. I think we've established certain useful premises though, like: Some people got a poster, others didn't, date of purchase doesn't seem to be a factor.

I would seriously recommend to any fan of ASoUE that they browse those galleries. Much of the material in there is fascinating, and some of it is written by Snicket himself. Even aside from that, it's absolutely characteristic of Snicket and ASoUE in a way that most other brands can only dream of.

Wow, Antenora! Thanks for uploading this - there's many things in there that I haven't had a chance to look at properly, but I'll be sure to when I have access to clear photos of all that. For one thing, I've never actually read the Dismal Dinner cards before, though I've seen them discussed often enough.

Ditto everyone else's comments - thanks Antenora. I've heard about the Dismal Dinner stuff but never read it before, and I particularly love the V.F.D.s in some of the stuff (although "Very Fancy Dessert" is a bit of a cheat when we've already had "Very Fancy Doilies" in TEE).
Do we know which materials were written by Handler, and which are considered fully canon? I found it particularly interesting that Lemony Snicket was once a theater critic for the Punctilio, and fired for an "unfair review" of Olaf's "fine performance" (Lunchables - Punctilio - 2). His brother Jacques was also working for the Punctilio at one point (mentioned in TGG).

The Dismal Dinner and the related Lunchables Punctilio editions have their text copyrighted to Lemony Snicket, so it seems to me that he wrote them; the subject matter and narrative style also strike me as highly plausible as Snicket's creation rather than someone else's. The Dismal Dinner I do consider to be book-canon, but the Punctilios might only be movie-canon.

I've seen The Complete Wreck being discussed here and would like to buy one with the American editions within. There are some on eBay but I can't be sure if they will include the UK or US editions and sellers aren't able to tell me because the products are kept in warehouses. Is it likely that if I buy from a UK seller, they're likely to be UK editions (and consequently, should I look into buying from the US)? This might seem obvious but it would be interesting to know if anybody has bought it from the UK and got US editions. Only because I thought they all had US editions inside until recently.

I don't think there is a U.K. edition of TCW. I've never heard of one. I'd be surprised if there was, as apparently HarperCollins had to halve its print run and only sold half of that, which doesn't sound like much of an example to imitate.

This is just so cool. I knew that the Lunchables existed but I didn't know about the rest.

I own a UK edition of The Complete Wreck. It's oddly priced at £90.87, which I suspect is to match the exact price of the American version at 2006 conversion rates. This is printed on the box itself, right below the barcode, so I know it's authentically meant for sale in the UK. Unfortunately, I can't give you any information about where to buy it. It was a birthday present from some years ago from my parents, who got it off eBay. For more information on the set, I've always presumed that the set was originally stocked with leftover copies of some of the books, because the number line below the ISBN number are different in the different books. The first full-page illustration of TSS is missing.

Weird. But you know, in the U.K. over the years I have seen various non-standard box sets in stores; I saw one once containing the first ten books, and another with TBB and The Blank Book. The impression I got was that Egmont maybe sometimes made up box sets on request for specific stores, or let them make one themselves.
I guess I would look into buying from the U.S., if that's the case. You'll get murdered on shipping fees, but the exchange rate might make up for it a little.

My collection is limited, as I read the ASoUE series using my friend's books*. I only have TBL, WCTBATH, TUA, and WDYSHL.
*My friend had The Complete Wreck
