Very nice, Tiago - a very nice return to what we so fondly remember about your works: A mystery, but with a strong style about it. I really can't wait to delve into all the mysteries of this mine, malodorous though it may be. I confess that I had been wondering why that would be such a bad thing, but maybe it's actually of vital importance? I just hope the Quagmires don't have to deal with a mine cart sequence. Those rarely go well, in either movies or video games.
Edit: Tiago's just added Chapter Two on the previous page.

Thank you Dante. I've missed writing. I seem to be getting the writing juices flowing again though. I definetely felt more inspired to write Chapter Two than I felt when I wrote Chapter One. I do know where the story is going next, so the next chapters should flow easily.

I love your timing, Tiago, you always post a new chapter when I need something to make the day better The mines are an interesting place, I really want to know what is waiting there for the Quagmires and the others.

Chapter Three The crossing of a bridge can often be a remarkable thing, depending on the bridge in question, the material with which it was built, and the breathtaking vista that can be appreciated from the comfortable interior of a limo, or a convertible car as you drive from one side of the bay to the other. But unfortunately for the Quagmires the bridge they had to cross at present was an old stone bridge that looked as if it might crumble at any moment, and instead of the comforts of a car, they had to do so in a man-powered metallic mine cart which needed more oil before they could put it to use. There was a small shack on the platform and after a thorough search Cid found a can of oil and used to lubricate the mine cart’s joints. After that all of them got on the mine cart, with Quigley and Cid on the platform on the back, maneuvering the lever that gave speed to the cart. They began moving, and soon they were on the bridge. The breathtaking depth underneath them made them all very uneasy, and hearing another roar did not improve the mood. ‘I wish that noise would stop. It’s maddening.’ Cindry was the most nervous out of all of them. ‘Yes, it is. Let’s not dwell on it, though.’ Cid replied. ‘Hard not to, not much to do down here.’ Duncan contested. ‘True. Let’s just focus on getting out of here, alright?’ was Cid’s response. As he and Quigley maneuvered the valve the cart picked up speed and they were almost halfway through the bridge already. ‘You guys might want to slow down a bit. We don’t know the state of the tracks ahead, there could be a hole and I don’t want to die.’ Isadora warned them. ‘We’ll try to slow it down a bit, Isadora.’ Quigley replied. And slow down they did. From the bridge, they could appreciate the landscape around them. The abyss below, the incredibly tall stone walls, the buildings with faint flickering lights, and the openings at the top reminded them of a gothic cathedral’s high roof and the light pouring at the top was a blessing. As they neared the entrance to the opposite side of the mines, where the bridge led into a tunnel, however, they realized something was wrong. ‘Wait, what are those?’ Duncan pointed to a mysterious formation of round shapes on the stone wall. ‘I think I saw one move.’ Cindry remarked. ‘What is that?’ Duncan shook his head, leaning out of the cart, trying to focus. ‘Be careful, Duncan.’ Cid alerted. ‘Wait a minute…’ Duncan realized something. ‘Well?’ Quigley asked. ‘I think…they’re alive.’ It all happened very fast; a hot gust of wind came from beneath them, and with it, the guttural roar that had tormented them, and the things began to move rapidly. They descended on the wall with terrifying dexterity, landing on the bridge and rushing towards the mine cart with many thuds and thumps, the sound of their claws scratching against the metallic tracks. ‘What are they?!’ a terrified Cindry screamed, and then they heard the cracking sound of stone breaking. ‘I don’t know…’ Duncan said, as the creatures drew near, and as more of them fell on the bridge, rushing towards them. ‘Everyone, get out!’ Cid shouted. ‘The bridge is breaking, we don’t have much time! Run!’ Everyone got out of the cart and ran, the bridge cracking more and more, and the creatures behind them. But unfortunately for Cid, Cindry, Duncan, Quigley and Isadora, the bridge was a lot more precarious than it looked. It cracked and crumbled beneath their feet, and they fell screaming into the dark abyss, followed by some of the creatures which were also unfortunate. And here, dear reader is where their paths split into three. For the following chapters of this book, which are simultaneous and can be read in any order, you can choose to read about Cid and Isadora’s path, and the terrifying enemy they encountered, or Duncan and Cindry’s path, and their difficult journey in the darkness, or Quigley’s lone path, and read about what he did to find his siblings and friends again while being attacked by the unknown creatures. You can read the three of them in any order, or not read them at all, and have a good night sleep instead.

A short but great chapter, with mysterious creatures and a dangerous situation that of course turns out bad! I like how they are separated in groups, Isadora with Cid, Duncan with Cindry and Quigley alone.

Really looking forward to the simultaneous chapters, although I suspect that, unless you choose to hold any chapters back from us for a while, Tiago, that it may be difficult for us not to read them in numerical order... but I like seeing alternative perspectives and having a slightly more complex reading sequence, so this is exciting to me.

Now I'm really hooked, I prefer these stories with multiple characters and experiences independent from each other, it is so much more dynamic than a straightforward storyline. I have something to look forward to after I finish the novel I'm reading.

Thank you Ellie. I have to say, it would be better to read the series that came before this one first. You can find them in the index through the link on my signature.

I recommend that too, Ellie, not only because then you know what happened, but also because it's good.

@dante: I'm aware of that, Dante, so I decided to only publish the next three chapters all at once, so you guys can choose which one to read first.

I missed this when you originally posted, Tiago, but it's excellent to see its return! The plot so far has subverted my expectations, but I'm impressed by the labyrinth of layers in this story. You've really left us on a cliffhanger.

Thanks for the update. Good to know when we have to set some time aside for reading, as I'll have to read them simultaneously, too. Well, as simultaneously as it's possible to read three separate things. I.e. consecutively.
