Prologue
The boat had never stood any chance, and he had tried to warn them. Sadly, they hadn’t listened.
As the authorities pulled the wreckage to shore, all he could do was wonder if there had been any survivors.
It had come almost from nowhere, and when he had told him about the danger to come, he knew he would never listen. He had always been like that, argumentative, and separate from the rest of them. But he has still sailed The Citanti out into the ocean, and now the deaths of many good volunteers were on him
Standing up high on the cliffs, he could see the people running around on the beach, some panicking, others resigned to the despair of the ships destruction. He wondered what they had made of the days events.
The wave had seemingly come out of nowhere - although, as he knew to well, it was not actually a wave - and has torn the ship apart in one blow. He suspected there were no survivors.
He realised he would have to call Poe soon, as making a new ship would not be cheap. Although he didn’t exactly lack money.
He looked back down as one of the ships large sails washed up on Briny beach. Children had run up to it, while others had started using pieces of wood to help build their sandcastles. None of them understood the tragedy of the days events. He wondered how he would tell his children about the death of their uncle, and his closest friends. Although he knew one day they would have to tell his children about their work, he and his wife had pledged to keep them separate from the world of VFD, for as long as they can at least.
The wind began to pick up again, and he looked out at the horizon. He wondered what would happen if they sailed out there again, all four of them. They could return to the island and live safe from all of the troubles of the world. But they had tried that before, and, of course, the troubles of the world had found them.
He could the sun beggining to set on the horizon, and the light burned the sky red.
Something bad was going to happen. He could feel the tension in the air. This accident was just the start. Something was coming, and they had to be ready.
‘Bertrand?’
He jumped out of his skin and gave a loud shout.
‘Don’t do that!’ He turned around and kissed Beatrice ‘You sacred me.’
‘Sorry. But we have to go. J called and said M had made a new discovery, but D needs to examine it first.’
‘What about the kids?’
‘Oh, they’ll be fine. We can send them to the beach.’
‘No. I.. think we should send them to the park. We can call up Issac.’
‘Okay.’ They both turned and looked out at the ocean. Before they had to continue with their lives, contact Issac, go to Monty’s, and await Dewey’s arrival.
Several minutes later, a man in a suit and tie pulled himself out of the water, up onto the rocks. He gasped for air, and laid over on his back. He looked up at the cliff tops, and could see some birds flying around.
He sighed. What he had just seen…
He had died. He was sure of it. He fallen from the deck and the water had flooded his lungs and he had drowned.
And yet here he was. Definitely alive. He pushed himself up, scrambled over the slippery rocks until he began to reach the dirty sands of Briny beach, and he fell forward on his face.
David Faraday was confused.
But then , he always was.
And he couldn’t remember… anything.
It is said it looked into the heart and soul of all of makind, and it ran away from the darkness
