I think it would be very suitable of a storyline for an animated series. I prefer using the plot for an anime than a cartoon, though. So fits.
Discuss.

The idea of adapting ASoUE as something like a weekly episodic cartoon series, in a suitably morose art style, has been proposed in the past, and the same would probably work for ATWQ. I feel like, if it were ten years ago - no, more like twenty - there might even have been attempts at low-budget live-action television adaptations. They wouldn't be all that impossible, really, by the standards of the time.
I don't know if an anime would suit, though. The general art style of anime is, I think... well, it would have to be more heavily stylised than most anime will readily consent to, although I won't rule out the possibility of it working. They'd have to be really prepared to emphasise the atmosphere, though.

I'm pretty sure Daniel Handler would never ever consent to having either ASoUE or ATWQ adapted into an anime series.

And, the atmosphere problem... I've read a manga called Ouroboros, which author puts in the Snicket-smell perfectly. I think that isn't too much of a problem.

I think I'd rather watch a live-action film adaptation than an anime series, thank you very much.

Well, I liked the movie. The reason why it was a fail was probably because they cast Jim Carrey- don't get me wrong, Carrey is a great actor, but I don't really see him as Olaf. A film adaptation of WCTBATH, on the other hand, will probably be better (in my opinion), if it starred and narrated by Liam Aiken as Lemony, made it black-and-white, and had subtle, dark comedy.

Adaptations of the works of Snicket will always suffer the problem of balancing their innate cleverness with a need to appeal to the mainstream. That was where the ASoUE film failed, and I suspect ATWQ would have similar problems. This is perhaps wherein the advantages lie for a television serial in some form, but then the problem is one of cost, as one can imagine a fairly generous budget being required.

I'm not sure where the numbers are indicating the movie did that poorly, but based on these statistics, total domestic and foreign sales put the production at $69 million profit. Plus it won an Academy Award. I guess, by Hollywood standards, that isn't terribly successful - but it doesn't necessarily indicate a second movie wouldn't do well, either. I think that ATWQ would in some ways be more suited for a cartoon series than would ASOUE. The style and atmosphere are almost more defined for television and easier to capture in the former series, to say nothing of the plot, which I think is also more neatly segmented.

Yeah, cartoon may also work. But probably anime works better.

Why do you think that is - because anime, due to usually being adaptations of existing written works, tend to have greater focus on continuous plotlines, whereas cartoons often only have arcs in the background and focus instead on single-episode storylines?

It is because it would be fun to have ATWQ as a whole.

I think I'd rather watch a live-action film adaptation than an anime series, thank you very much. Well, if that's what you think, but remember, ASOUE's movie was a big fail... It wasn't a fail at all, it was well reviewed and performed very well in the box office for a kids movie. It never got a sequel because of studio politics. Truthfully I don't see the need for it to be an anime at all. If it were to be animated at all it would undoubtedly be in a movie format utilizing the style of the illustrations. I would however prefer a live action movie just because the genre and setting actually fits a few classic movie conventions. Black and white would be an interesting idea, but even better from an artistic standpoint is the coloring from the illustrations where it utilizes black and white and one other color (Blue in the first one). It would be more visually striking that way.
