The second is more speculative: Kit, determined to continue her plan with a new associate, will team up with Theodora's former apprentice. It's good to see others on the same wavelength. That was one of my theories when I was in your position - but did or didn't it happen? Obviously, I can't say... not for another three and a bit weeks, anyway. I don't really know what I was meant and meant not to do. I'm pretty sure that the intention in distributing advance copies to non-professional reviewers is to ensure that some spoilers do leak and create hype based on speculation about their context and a desire to see how they are executed, without the publishers having to carefully orchestrate a promotional scheme themselves; I'm sure they don't care about spoilers so long as people will still buy the book. On the other hand, it's possible that anyone doing that has to operate under the radar. I did ask if I could produce any teasers for the fans and never got a reply. Being a privilege-conscious fan who wants to do things by the book is hard. I regret the fact that the dry spell before this preview came out could probably have been alleviated if I'd cared less about obeying rules that probably don't exist. Maybe next year (if they keep giving out advance copies). Maybe this year, if people demand it.

Maybe this year, if people demand it. Perhaps you could set up a mailing list of your own, where people already buying the book could sign up to receive teasers. When multiple recipients are included in a PM, it functions as a sort of exclusive thread. On the other hand, if something leaked onto the main forum ... well, you did try to keep it quiet, didn't you?

...That is very much worth considering. Interested parties, post or PM me with your ideas of whether you want teasers and what they might be (or will you simply trust my judgement?).

I trust your judgment, but if you're short on ideas maybe consider quotes directly photographed from the ARC - perhaps a full page with words blacked out, or maybe a vertical half page. Also, I can envision missing person files (for any of the characters), based on the theme of the book, and similar content-based teasers. Perhaps some background reading on an allusion from the later chapters, which would be helpful in another sense. Leading semi-plot-driven questions (why would someone steal a statue that wasn't theirs to begin with?).

How about every other word of a given chapter?

...That would still be pretty long, you know! And would barely hide anything at all! It'd be like reading a list of spoilers, but really terribly written.
I have a good idea of the sort of thing I want to do now, though. I'll give it a few days to mature and get some preparation done, and then start a sign-up thread.
