Hello all! I'm new here; I've read posts from here for a while now but finally decided to take the plunge and make an account. I have been an avid fan of the series since I first read TBB at a very young age, and have continued to return to the books over the years, with a growing appreciation of their complexity and the various literary allusions that Handler makes. However, my motives for joining are not entirely innocent: I am currently writing an exploratory extended essay on the intertextuality of ASOUE, focusing on the figure of Beatrice and her relation to Date's Beatrice in especial; so if anyone feels like adding their thoughts on the matter or the intertextual nature of the novels in general, or pointing me in the direction of good threads, please do so here!! Any thoughts or ideas that I use in my essay will, of course, be credited.

Oh, and I should probably add something more general about myself: I am a Brit (yayy), I am applying to read English at Uni (yayy again), and I adore all sorts of literature: at the moment, I am slightly obsessed with the rise of character depth and ambiguity in Europe, so please feel free to ramble about the brilliance of Stendhal and Dosteyevsky with me I am obsessed with the various literary allusions that Handler makes, and with the literary tropes that he either uses or deliberately abuses... I have literally (as opposed to figuratively) pages and pages of notes that I have made on the series. I also believe that The End is a work of genius (but I shall restrain myself from ranting about why here)!

Welcome Moseymoo! You are a Snicketologist after our own heart. I see you have already met Dante: two other people you definitely ought to meet are Sherry Ann and Terry Tumbleweed, who I think have interests which overlap with yours.

Hi, and welcome to 667, moseymoo! Nice to have another Snicketologist on board. Oh, and I'm going to start English studies at Uni next month too : D And wow, I've been mentioned with the Dante-Sherry Ann-et al club. In case Hermes hasn't made it clear, he's definitely the go-to-man on the topic(s) you are looking for as well. For starters on literary allusions in ASoUE, I recommend this website (the entry for "Beatrice" is at the beginning). You've probably found that one already, but this is an essay you should look into as well. Oh and here's also a college essay on ASoUE; it's a different topic to yours, but it may serve as a guideline of sorts, or a formal help.

I mentioned Sherry Ann and Terry because they have specific interests in intertextuality: SA is interested in the Gothic background to Snicket's work, and Terry is especially good on allusions. I am also a Snicketologist, as Terry says, but I tend to focus more on continuity stuff. And yes, Antenora is a great Snicketologist but is here all too rarely.

so Terry - allusions, SA - gothic, Hermes - contiuity, Dante - Thematic elements? I suppose im most liek hermes then but idk. Not to campre myself in amy way in terms of talent, just that continuity is what intrests me most.

I don't want to pigeon-hole people: Sherry Ann and Terry have those interests that would be especially relevant to Moseymoo, but it's not as if they don't do other things as well.

Wow Poe's Coats Host Toast: which Uni? I'm just applying this year - sending off my UCAS form on Friday! Thanks for all the advice Hermes -- it's nice to find so many people treating ASOUE as Literature rather than just children's books

There are quite a few more essays of that flavor, but as they are not publicly available posting them becomes trickier. If your institution has access to them, I would recommend "The Ethics and Practice of Lemony Snicket" and "'He's Behind You!' Reflections on Repetition and Predictability in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events."
