Chapter 4
My dear Beatrice,
I am skipping this part of the story. I hope you don't care. The first hours that I had as being an apprentice were very boring.
So I was working at the library, making sure that the VFD books didn't fall into the wrong hands, and trying to crack secret messages, when Sam called me to his desk. He simply showed me a request card, from a place called Stain'd By The Sea. The book requested was called "But I Cannot Meet You at the Fountain". What a coincidence. When I read the name of the author, Sorry, I realized that it wasn't a coincidence.
"Can I order a book?" I asked Sam.
He smiled. "What is the author's name?"
I thought just for a second.
"Don T. Worry."
"And the title?"
"I'll measure it myself."
Sam wrote it down and smiled.
"You're not telling anyone, right?"
"No. But be careful, Kit."
My work that day was boring and exhausting, and even when I called D or B or R or other letters of the alphabet on the new wireless telephone, all they said was "Be very careful!" or "Don't let them catch you!"
But I needed more than being careful.
Like every big city in the world, The City has very strange sights sometimes. But I am sure that Hector's hot air balloon parking next to the library is at least number 20 on the list.
"Nice camouflage," I said as he walked in.
It was two weeks after I started working at the library, and I was almost ready for sneaking into the museum.
"You don't have to be sarcastic, Kit. I just brought you some maps."
"Thanks."
"Oh, and I visited your brother last week. Seems like he solved a case on his own. Not that it's very surprising. But that town is sooo boring! Most of the businesses are closed, and there are no Mexican restaurants! How are people supposed to live without corn flour or jicama? And what do gluten-"
"I'm sure Lemony will be fine," I said, saved from hours of speeches on South American cuisine. "But you have to order a book or people will think you're up to something."
"Do you have any good steampunk books?"
I handed Hector a list I made for him.
"See ya later."
