In the Far East Suite's bathroom there is a hairpin, which I later used to the pick the jail cell's lock.

You did?It didn't work for me.
However, I think I have now perceived how the case may be solved without going to jail.

This is awesome, all I've done so far is eat the painting in the Far East Suite.
EDIT: I can't seem to do anything, I ask Theodora about why she is glaring, but all she's doing is intensifying her glare

However, I think I have now perceived how the case may be solved without going to jail. Perhaps you're using the wrong terminology? I put in something like "unlock lock with hairpin."
And you do need to go to jail. Or at least, I don't know if the logic game's solveable without it. Edit: Teleram, I do think the start of the game is a bit opaque. "ask Theodora about case" seems to do the trick, but I only ever ask her about the hairpin and then she just ignores that and tells me about the case anyway.

yay I solved the case without any help. I did try massive amounts of nonsense though, like "eat moths" or "attack theodora" and I was delighted by some of the answers

But my original worry was that, even if I got out of jail, any attempt to resume the investigation would send me back there, and I've now realised that that's not a problem.

I really like how they use a sugar bowl for example when you type help. Is it just a coincidence?

I'm pretty sure QRV was the one who wrote the 'help' thing, so the mention of the sugar bowl is probably not a coincidence.
