A comet crashing into Earth, I've considered that, but there doesn't seem to be much of a grey zone regarding plays in that matter. plays are meant to be performed (with the possible exception of some postmodern/experimental plays). seems like you're right, though, and bear doesn't see it that way. How bout listing some notable examples, bear. Trying not to go too off topic here, but I prefer cinema to theatre myself, and I think if Shakespeare was born today he'd be in the movie biz.

it's not some weird opinion i hold. it's called a closet drama. the most famous is probably goethe's faust, though most romanticists wrote non-performed plays too. probably because they were influenced by the literary, poetic merit of english renaissance plays, i.e. the bits that often *weren't performed*, rather than the bloody and/or romantic plots that kept the public happy.

Yeah, I haven't read any one of these, so I'm ignorant about that particular kind of play. Shouldn't you then take up your gripe with plays that identify as closet dramas and not with "all" plays at large? I guess you admitted you only read 2 plays, so it doesn't seem like your criticism's well thought out in the first place.

wait, what do you think my gripe is?
i think closet dramas are actually some of the best plays, as far as the genre goes. and i put "read" in quotes meaning i generally follow your advice and watch performances instead of reading them. of course i'm familiar with the full text of more than 2 plays, i'm not a fuuuuuucking phil-i-stine.

Gotcha. Idk what your gripe is though, since all you said so far is that they're all "kinda bad".

it threatens to, but nah.
maybe 'bad' is too harsh (says the rando teenager, generously giving a bit of slack to centuries of acclaimed playwrights whose reputations would be otherwise threatened by my fancy opinion). but it's definitely the most limited of the 3 literatures, and even when i read a really good play, i still feel like i could have been much better served reading something that wasn't a play.
