Yeah I remember meeting a Canadian once who said she hated when people said she was American. Then I said "But aren't you North American?". Then she gave me an annoyed look as if to say "Fine".

The problem is not being called American being from the continent, the problem is people from the United States getting the exclusivity of the word

But the USA is the only one to include America in its name. If Canada was instead called The Republic of the Northern Bits of America, then sure. But with no other country claiming the name, I see no problem.

But the USA is the only one to include America in its name. If Canada was instead called The Republic of the Northern Bits of America, then sure. But with no other country claiming the name, I see no problem. This is interesting. Few people know that Brazil already used the name "United States of Brazil" when the republic was proclaimed. Thus forming a gentilic with the name United States would not be appropriate either, and it would give the impression that the very idea of a republic originated there. I think another country that may face similar identification problems is the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. Different countries, which have the name of the same river in their names, and to aggravate the problem, still have the government system in their names. Forming Gentile in a way that differentiated the natives of each of these countries must have been difficult for some languages, and many must resort to auxiliary words. Another gentile that might be considered a bit problematic is "British". After all, the island of Ireland is part of the British Isles, but the country Ireland is not part of UK. Northern Ireland, on the other hand, is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So, can those who are native to Ireland be called British or not? I think that a way of, in English, to differentiate this, could be to call all the natives of the British Isles british with a small b and the natives of the UK with a capital "B". And who is born in Northern Ireland can be called Irish?

In the UK you don't actually get much compared to a lot of European countries where 30 days plus public holidays is standard. We have "flexible bank holidays" where I work, so apart from Christmas and new year and monarch related days that don't happen regularly we don't have the UK public holidays off automatically, we get extra days to book off either on those days or whenever we want. Most people take them off on the actual holidays, but I like to take them on other days so I can do things without everywhere being really crowded. Plus work is normally more chilled on those days because half the other people are off so they can't bother me with questions. I used to get this in my old job, now we just have to take the bank holidays at my new job, but I think it's kind of nice to have an enforced national day off, idk, maybe the novelty will wear of Standard in the UK is 25 days + bank holidays I think. At my work you can buy up to an extra 2 weeks (this year I bought an extra week, so I sacrifice a small part of my salary per month) or sell a week if you want less days off. USA's annual leave/PTO will never not be insane to me (another long list of reasons why I'm just not interested in the country lmao)
