i only just bothered to check out The Dismal Dinner, and it is obviously pure DH. that article is vague enough that it could only be referring to The Dismal Dinner, so i still firmly believe that DH did not write these Daily Punctilio things. frankly even "How To Dress For Every Occasion by the Pope" is more clever than this stuff.

If he didn't write them, I'd be curious to find out who did and how it was decided what Handler did and didn't write. Obviously, these could have just been somebody from the marketing department doing their best Snicket impression.

This is giving me such a flashback! I was in sixth grade when this movie came out and I was obsessed, I remember these quite well. I had a friend who gave me a set of these and I remember adding them to a binder I was carrying around full of articles/magazines/trading cars from the movie. Unfortunately I think that binder got thrown out eventually, but it's nice to see these again.
I remember Nickelodeon magazine did a special edition with a comic book version of the movie, that was my favorite bit of tie in merchandise. The writing was quite good as I recall, the framing device was that the story was being told by Olaf in front of a fireplace as he's eating a combination of red wine and cookies. I really wish I could find a good scan of that, I'd love to revisit that.

I was always fascinated by how a lunchables extra like The Dismal Dinner, obviously written by Handler/Snicket, could include such a significant canon-confirmation of (or strong hint at) Olaf being the one who set fire to the Baudelaire mansion. There's also one scan of an original Brett Helquist illustration from one of these movie tie-in magazines that I always liked, which you can see here.

I wonder if Handler had the idea to eventually reveal that Olaf did it in the later books, but then changed his mind or just never got around to it, unintentionally leaving The Dismal Dinner as the sole source of this.

I will try and get to it this weekend! It's pretty long (at least 30 pages) so it might take me some time. I actually got in contact with Frank Pittarese, the writer of the comic, a couple of days ago. I mentioned that people here had fond memories of reading it back in the day. He said he had lots of fun working on that.

I just received in the mail all three volumes of the Daily Punctilio booklets that came in Lunchables meals in 2004 as promotion for the film. Would people be interested in me scanning and uploading them here? As far I can tell, the complete text is nowhere to be found online, as opposed to The Dismal Dinner that can be read everywhere. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!

That's a good Olaf line, about how the Baudelaires wouldn't know what to do with their fortune: "Give them a quarter, and they'd read it, tie it to a string, and eat it." lol
