i. how many books did you set out to read this year ?
ii. do you aim to read more each year ?
i know based on last years thread a lot of us had different goals in terms of quantity. my goal last year was 27 but i am attempting 52 this year. for those that use storygraph, what's the hype? i find the sense of community on goodreads rather warm, like i have an old coworker whom i have not spoken to since i was 15 yet we always like one another's progresses.

i don't really see how number-based reading goals will do one any good. committing to reading just one (1) challenging book is surely a better goal than trying to fill an arbitrary number with fluff and duck feathers.
there's nothing inherently valuable/commendable/virtuous about the plain act of "Reading."
(this is a general PSA, not necessarily directed at the Small Branch above me)

(this is a general PSA, not necessarily directed at the Small Branch above me) true, but you devoured so many books last year it would be unwise to ascertain that implementing books into your routine is unimportant. for me, i used to read so vivaciously when i was younger, it strengthened my imagination and vocab. nowadays, my writing is really poor (and sentence structure is suuuuuper franglaise), so even though i have a quantitative goal, the motivations behind it are qualitative.
i do like getting excited about books and find encouragement where i can - but i get what you mean with the whole "romanticising reading" phenomenon, especially in the context of booktok *shudders*

booktok sounds like the name of a southeast asian cryptid. “villagers refused to enter the forest for fear of the booktok”
personally the only encouragement I need to read is to get an interesting book in my hands, and to open it… but I perfectly understand the social aspect. there are some people i only know on goodreads, based on similar tastes, because of whom I have found some lovely livres. i will certainly take that before the Algorithm. (A large part of the praise I’ve heard for Storygraph is to do with its Algorithm…)

oh, that’s odd. i love (good) recommendations from friends. it’s like the only reason to have friends. but i especially like just snooping on what they’re into, and no aggro if i don’t like certain things.

So far I read 10? My aim as 30, but have revised to 20. I doubt I will hit this goal.

kismet for kids lit
when i first arrived here, i had no books so i went searching in the "street library" in my residence, i grabbed a YA dystopia and tore through it. however, it was the first book of a trilogy, so i was manifesting like hell to find the other two. when i was in the third and final shop, i was losing all hope - but i ended up finding a beefy copy of all three bound together !!!! my friend was holding it (cause 900 pages in my twig arms doth not make a happy child) and she flipped through, and it turned out to be a signed copy i have been op-shopping for all of my coursework books (i have had very fortunate destiny in being able to even acquire them) by going to all the charity shops in vicinity, and scanning each title until i found most of my prescribed texts!
So far I read 10? My aim as 30, but have revised to 20. I doubt I will hit this goal. how is your goal progressing thus far ? better or worse than this time last year ?
