Hello, it's Semblance. What do you write with? Where do you write? What do you like to do to get in the perfect writing mood? I write with whatever is most convenient at the time, so most often the phone(which someone was once appalled to learn about). I write wherever I can. Ideally, I'd have a small snack, chocolate chips and peanuts is one favorite, a drink, and music. I seldom do these three and often just have a video playing in the background. I'm curious to read your writing rituals. Rest Pleasantly.

that’s a lot of external stimuli, Mr Semblance. personally I need to be completely focused. I find it a bit like solving a math problem. so I need a physical page to scribble all over and “show my work”, retrace my steps if need be, etc. I used to write in google docs, so I could access it anywhere, but 1) I became more of a luddite, 2) I found it more fruitful to leave something in my head than to write it down immediately, and 3) I was quite resistant to revision when all I could see was the finished product on the screen. (DH has talked about the value of seeing every stage of your composition on the page. I also took his recommendation of writing in pen, for that reason.)
PS: much like reading, I can only write at home. But I can booboo in a public toilet NO SWEAT!!!

My writing habits depend fully on my task.
Most of my writing is done on my computer. I prefer using my Qwerkywriter keyboard but, when that's not availble, my Macbook keyboard gets the job done.
When writing long hand, I alternate between writing with a Blackwing pencil, a Uniball pen, and a fountain pen. I usually will write on a legal pad, note cards (if working on fiction), or a reporter notebook.
I have a hard time writing with a lot of background noise so I prefer doing it at home or a quiet place like a library. A snack is not a requirement, but always welcome.

ON PAPER ! i use a5 loose leaf paper for coursework, and several journals (one more "diary like" and one more project, planning theme based). i also use 2x a6 pocket notebooks, one for poetry and rhymes, and the other for shopping lists and reminders. it's not always practical to spill out pages on the go, so the smaller ones work well for shoving in a backpack. all are from random op shops for not much money at all, but i do prefer 1cm grid paper to the french stupid wide margin lined paper.
my coursework is in all capitals for easy access (and to share with others if needed), whilst my personal books are my scribbly cursive, which is more natural and cathartic for me. running writing is also best for stream of consciousness.
i typically only like to write with biros, i don't mind the MUJI 0.5-0.7 range though. like a good film, the tools aren't what makes the product good. it's the storytelling.

I'd like to write on paper more and test out fountain pens, but I'm left-handed, so it's not as easy.

I'd like to write on paper more and test out fountain pens, but I'm left-handed, so it's not as easy. I solved that as a young stripling by writing backwards like Leonardo. (…Because I was gifted a fountain pen. I didn’t get in the habit of it.) when my mother visited me a few months ago, I had her bring me one of those all-American piebald composition books, which I favor for their thick paper and durable binding. more Sinister problems: when using a spiral notebook, I have to write in it from back to front so the spirals don’t pyinch me.

I really like writing in notebooks without lines. I feel free, and I have no memories of school. My handwriting changes according to my feelings, and I can already identify the patterns formed in my handwriting. This way I can revisit my ideas and feelings when I reread and continue the story. I prefer to use blue or black ballpoint pens. And I like using completely new notebooks for new ideas.
However, this is not always possible. In fact, almost never. So, I write on my cell phone, or on the computer.

I write on my laptop, at least for the first draft, but have recently found i can edit and touch stuff up perfectly fine on my phone.
Sometimes I need ecternal stimlui to get my brain into gear, music in particular, but other times I can find it distracting or off-putting. I can write pretty well if there are lots of other people around me, but not if they can see my screen. But it can really be a struggle to write if I am in silence. I sturggle to think if there is silence in general, at least creatively.
Generally I find that if the writing is going well then that external element does not matter as much. It's the same with sitting in a chair at my desk - that helps if I'm sturggling, but if not then I can literally flop onto my bed like a teenager and write there.

I'm not too finnicky about longhand writing utensils, but I prefer ballpoint pens with regular or heavy tips, preferably black. I don't like to use pencils for writing; To me they are for drawing.
However, I write on the 'PUTER. Not exclusively, but mostly. It's because I write so much different stuff in my text document journal (a new journal for every year, broken up into months) that it's easy to lose track of my older ideas, and so ctrl+F (i.e. searching a document) is a must for me (I also use the search app AgentRansack). I'd never be able to track down specific ideas if they were all done longhand. And I often find myself revisiting old ideas to expand upon them when I have a new idea that somehow relates to the older one. When I'm on the go, I tend to write on my phone, to later add to my main journal.
I generally revise a lot, and I've found ways to keep re-written passages still in a text doc by using type color (gray) and square brackets. But I also find it satisfying to take the decision and completely let go of a revision option, by deleting it. With term papers I save a new file with time and date with every notable revision/new passage, and keep all files in a dedicated folder (so I can revisit older versions at will).
I mostly write at home, but I can write pretty much anywhere. I like going to the library when I have a task at hand, to keep from distraction. I enjoy a small sweet snack on the side, but staying hydrated is the only must. I can't write with music going on, except when writing lyrics. I can't imagine writing with a video playing in the background.
I do find enjoyment in writing longhand and having the text have a certain look, but have to say I'm not a fan of the slowness.
