A new adaptation of Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables was just released as an Audible audio drama. Catherine O'Hara voices the character of Marilla and it is directed by Megan Follows, who played Anne in the 1985 miniseries.
This got me thinking about the similarity of that premise to the The Bad Beginning: an orphan (or orphans) move in with a new guardian and run into some troubles. Other than that- and the inclusion of an island- they are different in almost every other way.
Has DH ever talked about the Anne books and/or his opinion of them? Has anybody here read them or like them?
I watched the miniseries as a kid and I loved the Netflix series that came out about the same time as ASOUE.

freckles and plaits do not normally give gothic vibes , so i doubt asoue nods to the book. it is only in very modern history that orphans are seldom and not typically linked to childhood.
however they are promising parallels and we'd be super down to read your observations if you end up listening to the adaptation!
on a gother vibe - i do so hope that catherine o'hara will be in the beetlejuice sequel...

Yeah, like I said, they aren't all that similar, particularly tonally. They also represent a whole genre of children's literature that DH seems to be disinterested in, ie the "plucky" protagonist (that word seems to be made for Anne lol) I was just curious if he took any elements and turned them on their head or if he made passing reference to them that I had missed. Sometimes he will mention a book or author whose works Snicket (and himself too) dislikes. I seem to recall that he feels negatively toward Beatrix Potter, for example. She is

i read the first chapter of Anne of Green Gables last year. i was a little surprised to find it had a typically somnolent victorian narrative. that's not a value judgment - but i knew my brother read and loved it around the age of 10, and if i had tried to read that at 10 i would have ripped all my skin off and jumped into the nearest active geyser.

I've never read the book but your characterization of it as "somnolent" is sort of in line with how I would expect it to read on the page. I liked the Netflix series because it brought with it some modern sensibilities and themes that spiced up the narrative. P. S. This is my 200th post. Yay me!

I only vaguely remember this…which is maybe for the best

I have a great deal of nostalgia for the book and animated series(yes there was one). While today I tend to gravitate toward darker stories it's nice to have a break from that and just read something wholesome. I liked the Netflix series at first but kind of tuned out after it starting attempting to add more modern themes.
