AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger. It is not part of AOL, the ISP however. You can have basic cable, DSL, dial-up and use AIM without resorting to *gasp* AOL...

You're confusing him more, I think... Lemme clarify: AIM is AOL Instant Messenger. It allows you to chat with your friends over the web, without using up a phone bill. AOL is America OnLine. It is an ISP, or internet service provider. Through it, you connect to the America OnLine network, which lets you browse the web. AOL is supposed to "simplify" everything, but as far as I can tell, fails miserably. Luckily, AIM is seperate from AOL and is a free download from, as noted above, www.aim.comYou want AIM. Your basic ISP ought to be enough for the internet.

I was under the impression that he said it because he thought you needed AOL for it, and was disappointed, not because he wanted to make fun of you or anything like that.
