I'm beginning to feel that this is a sketchy topic, even for Disturbing Discussion, but I'm interested to hear what other people have to say.
I almost never hear people discuss this kind of thing at school, and my parents have never mentioned it. My friend once tried to explain what it was, as it was the main focus of a CSI episode, but I didn't really understand until I read an article in a recent issue of Time magazine.
For those of you who haven't the foggiest idea what I'm talking about, the dictionary.com definition is:
sadomasochism- n : sexual pleasure obtained both by inflicting pain or receiving pain
But that's not only what I'm addressing... there was an example of a couple in the article... the woman never did ANYTHING without the consent of her husband. He told her what to wear each day, she had to ask his permission if she wanted to smoke a cigarette, order for her at restaurants, and he would praise her like a dog when she did something right. I was completely blown away by this... how on earth could people be happy like that?
So what do you think of the concept of sadomasochism, inflicting or recieving pain to show love? What do you think of places where people pay to be hurt? What about fashions which are suggestive of the sadomasochistic culture ('bondage' pants, stilleto heels)? What do you think of relationships where one person has such immense control over the other? Am I completely out of line to be posting this here?

I'm not supportive of it being forced on other people, but hey, if it involves two consenting adults, why not? It's not like you can dictate what people do in the bedroom.

A roommate of mine was into that kind of thing. One of our teachers was also into it. He was an ugly little man married to a beautiful blonde. He drove a big pick-up with handcuffs on the rearview mirror. Both these people were EXTREMELY intelligent individuals. They weren't dirty slobs nor were they scuzzy pervs. They were both pretty egotistical, though. I wonder if this is a trait... Be that as it may, what goes on in the bedroom is only the buisness of the people IN the bedroom. Unless, of course, you are a voyeur. Note: Ann Rice wrote a series of books under the nom du plume Anne Rampling, they deal with S&M in a way that is both tasteful (yes, it can be done) and very readable.

Swans, and any other Alias watchers, did you know there was supposed to be an S&M scene in the last episode? It was for Lauren/Sark, they might still put it into a future episode..
I wouldn't want to purposley give or recieve pyshical pain, that concept is just beyond me.

Geez, Mamba, all you ever think about is sex, eh? XD Oh yeah. ALL the time. To an extent, yes it does creep me out. But then, as Sam said, there is a certain appeal to sadomasochism. As I see it, it's the dark side of love and sex... it adds an extra level to a relationship, by playing around with dominance and control. I would never want to go as far as to draw blood or cause any scars on anyone, but to me, this kind of thing has intrigue... I wonder though, about laws pertaining to sadomasochism... has anyone heard of court cases about this?

As far as court cases concerning S&M... I couldn't find the ruling on it, but found several references to it being illegal. I found several cases that tie in .. and a couple informative web-pages. In August of '03, Timothy Tymkovich was sworn in as judge on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He compared s&m to other traditionally outlawed practices such as : cockfighting, drug use, bestiality, suicide, sodomy and prostitution. Williams v. Pryor, Bowers v. Is it illegal state-to-state or federally? I'm guessing state-to-state, since it IS likened with sodomy and prostitution, which are in some states legal and others not.
Say...why IS sodomy illegal? Seems a little nonsensical to me. Not to change the subject of the thread...

Luna: No idea... that's an American thing, I think... SPRINGTIIIIIIME FOR SWAAA~NS AND GERMANYYY Hey swans... why love Nazis? Or was that a joke...? What about the creepy new agey Nazis with the cult-ness and the "white power" and craziness... And love Nazis how? Like... think they're attractive in movies/books/history or actually think Naziism is appealing as a personality trait in people you know? And yeah... "Whatever floats your boat". Queen stole the line I was going to use (grr.... stupid psychics...). It's they're But back to Mamba's example... this woman who did nothing without her husband's permission... I seriously doubt it would give her pleasure... or at least, I wouldn't be eager for someone to control every aspect of my life. I mean... yeah. But maybe that's just me.

Good things. Just making sure.
It's French Revolutionaries for me... So I know what you're talking about as far as admiration of a type of historical figure... I mean... I'm up for Guillotine sex or anything, I just think Robespierre was a very attractive guy... I sure hope Luna is still following this thread or that will have made no sense at all to anyone...
EDIT: PANDORA HAS A TROI AND RIKER AVATAR!!!! *freaks out and melts into a pool of Star Trek geekdom*

*humping a guillotine* I'm sorry, what?
I only like the funny Nazis. Like, the kind from The Producers. Which is a nice segue into this dream I had. I dreamt that I was a messenger-girl thing for Bialystock and Bloom, and I had to run a bunch of notes all over town to Roger de Bris, Franz, etc. So anyway, Gunter (Franz's chauffeur, he drives a rickety old motorcycle car thing in Act 2) was the one who drove me around, and it was AWESOME because he drove off an overpass and we crashed and my CD player skidded like ten feet and was still working! :DDDD
Wait, what's this topic about again?
