Okay, my mini-theory, a word which here means “Theory I don’t really believe in but would be funny if it was real,” is that VFD is Volunteer Food Debaters. Think about it; In every book with a VFD member/place, there is food mentioned. Look:
Justice Strauss ~ Puttanesca Sauce Uncle Monty ~ Coconut Cream Cake Aunt Josephine ~ Chilled Cucumber Soup Charles ~ Chewing gum and Peaches Quagmires ~ Giant Casserole Esmé ~ Creamy Salmon Soup Esmé ~ Bread + Water
Are you beginning to see a pattern. Also, there is the Veritable French Diner! I mean, Diner’s serve…FOOD! Also, when they say extinguished, they could mean stoves. And lastly, The Sugar Bowl! That is a food-related item! Basically, discuss.

This could be something having to do with Verbal Fridge Dialogue...Consider the idea that the Baudelaires' guardians all have connections/are members of V.F.D. It's possible that each food item was a sort of signature, a way of saying "Monty was here" or something.
