1. I assume that it's in the form of money, but their may be jewels and other valubles as well. Not to mention some books with valuble information.
2. We assume she stole the sugar bowl; or rather Lemony stole that and Beatrice ended up getting blamed.

New Question In [glow=red,2,300]TGG[/glow]Violet and Klaus mentiond that once they left the library window open and that night it rained. Their mother yelled at them because they spoiled an atlas that she said was irreplaceable. My Question [glow=red,2,300] Why would an atlas be irreplaceable? [/glow] Any one can by a ordinary atlas. What was on the atlas to make the parents so angry about the spoiling of the atlas?

It might be a very old and rare atlas. Also, it wasn't really the spoiling of the atlas that angered the Baudelaire parents - it was the knowledge that Klaus had discovered the hidden books behind it.
Is there any purpose to these questions?

So did the Baudelaires have a home insurance for their home and property, or did they simply leave off a fortune for the Baudelaires that ignored the value of the home...?

Since insurance for the mansion has never been mentioned, we might as well assume that there wasn't such a thing.

There could have been something that suggested that there was. We can't jump to conclusions. I have been trying to figure out why Snicket chose the Quagmires to have Sapphires. If you think you know then you can say so...Anyway, I did some research and I learned that Sapphires are symbols of sincerity and faithfulness, and the Quagmires were sincere and faithful to the Baudelaires. They are symbolic for some other stuff too. www.gemnation.com/base?processor=getPage&pageName=sapphire_historyPerhaps this could be helpful in figuring out what the Baudelaire fortune was composed of....

Is there any purpose to these questions? I assumed that the atlas held valuable volunteer-related maps, that perhaps showed the locations of Safe Places, like Hotel Denouement, or other headquarters. Perhaps it could have held such useful maps like the one of the City's tunnels Lemony keeps locked up. That was my interpretation of that passage.

I also assumed that the atlas wasn't merely rare, but contained valuble information related to VFD passages and sanctuaries and such. The discovery of the hidden books probably made the parents angry as well.
And Salex, interesting information on sapphires.

The atlas must have at least been related to V.F.D. in some way.

After TCC I assumed that the Atlas might also contained stained maps to show locations of headquarters.
