I remember in I think The Austere Academy, Violet said something about her friend Ben. I always wondered where they went to school at before Prufrock Prep.

Ben was mentioned in book 6; I believe he gave Violet some elevator blueprints at some point. If memory serves, no other friends were mentioned by name. Curiously, the Baudelaires never went to school except in book 5, which implies that the series begins during summer vacation.

Evidence suggests that it's late winter, hence False Spring. The Baudelaires supposedly spent a "half-semester" at Prufrock , which would be about 2 months, but it seems like only one; their academic experience was sort of cut short. The series seems to span about 3-4 months, so if it started in August it's currently December. There's a timeline somewhere.

I do wonder why they're not in school before, though.

Doesn't the asoue calendar say that the baud mansion burnt down on march 31st? So then the series would begin in march. And in aa it says: Normally the baudelaires would have sat with their friends, but all their friends were far far from prufrock preparatory school. So they did have SOME friends before the fire(how could they not? They're charming, resourceful and rich.)

Thanks for catching the calendar detail; I'd forgotten about that. This means that if my estimated timespan is correct, it's currently July in the series. I guess Mr. Poe just neglected to cover the school-attendance issue when choosing guardians. He neglects a lot of things, out of either stupidity or malice. Anyway, I found the timeline. Thank thee, Mike Cuellar.

March 31st is the date the ALLEGED mansion ALLEGEDLY burned down. so maybe it wasnt the date and this was a red herring.
Im sure the Bauds did have some friends...

Ben was mentioned in book 6; I believe he gave Violet some elevator blueprints at some point. He gave them to her for her birthday. I'm pretty sure that's the only friend they metion, although I'm sure they have more. Maybe they weren't put in school because none of their guardians could pay for it or something.

you'd think their friends would help them or something after reading about them in the newspaper. They would probably know them well enough to say that the newspaper was wrong about the Baudelaires.

I think all their friends have, as Lemony said, fallen by the wayside. It really does happen when you go through a tragedy of some kind, it happened to me when one of my friends died and again when I got sick. Strange.
