While the topic of the initials J.S. are being discussed, I wanted to mention that on "Factmonster.com" there was a quiz about the Slipery Slope, and the last question was "What does J.S. stand for?". It says that the correct answer is Jacques Snickett.I don't know if this could be reliable (probably not), but it really intrigued me.
