i know snicket has blueprints and maps and all the stuff of the bauds history, but how does he know what they're saying? how does he know exactly what they were doing in their different homes? is it just like an interpretation of what they do, or what?

He is a very tenacious and dedicated researcher, tracking down people who were there and interviewing them closely to figure out exactly what was said.

but sometimes there werent even people around the bauds, like in jail. what was someone constantly right next to them that they didn't notice? i bet not. even if he did what u said, he couldn't get everything they said right. most adults ignore the bauds anyway...

He must get a first hand account from at least one of the Baudelaire's eventually, otherwise he'd have to take artistic stretches in order to know their innermost thoughts.

Take a look at the notes in TBB Rare Edition. He records how he asked people "Did you say 'blah blah blah'?" and the person acknowledges that it's close. So he may have eventually asked the Bauds, or he reconstructed it from others' recollections.

He doesn't follow them everywhere. He just takes estimated guesses when he can't do the above (posts) .

Well, I think he is supposed to meet them later on in the series, like in book 13 or something like that. I understand that he wouldnt know everything, and they wouldnt either, but I think its just that with all of the VFD everywhere (there is one in every book other than Olaf, you know)I am sure they heard some of the things. That portion of the VFD can be called the Volunteers For Detection, i guess. I am only shooting out thoughts here, you know.

He is probably a step or two behind them. So, when they're at Caligari Carnival, he might still be at the Village of Fowl Devotees. When they're at Heimlich Hospital, he's still at 667 Dark Avenue. So, he might have started researching them around the time of TWW.
