Apologies all 'round if something similar to this has been posted before. I don't usually make efforts to explain the enormous backstory behind the series because I'm simple.
But anyway, I found a possible explanation, story-wise, for the changing of the eye symbol. Since we know Olaf split V.F.D. into two parts (or we've assumed so) do you think it's reasonable to speculate that Olaf has his own little sect of the organization now, represented by a different eye? We know he has a lot more cronies than just the troupe. Do you think that maybe they used to all be part of V.F.D. itself and just joined him when the organization split?
Discuss plzkthx.

Thats a good theory but Jaques Snicket obviously wasnt a part of Count Olaf's VFD as we can put it, yet the tatoo on his ankle is the same.

Good point, Luna, yet in TSS, Quigley made a thing about how both sides of the schism used the same codes. But that was codes, not insignias.

Yeah, I was thinking that Olaf's group would have had the "normal" eye (the oval-shaped one), while the old group would still have kept the VFD eye. But that wouldn't explain how Jacques had the regular kind on his ankle. Since he wasn't evil.

I am not sure, this could just be a techniacality, but do we know if Jaques is good or not, arent the books leading in to the theme of morral uncertainty?

I think the tattoos on both Jacques and Count Olaf are the same, they both look like an eye but they are actually the hidden VFD insignia.

They're not the hidden-VFD one. They're just the normal oval-shaped eye that they used until Carnivorous Carnival.

The Bret Helquist drawings certainly make it seem that way, but the argument could be made that they just look like that from a distance and they really were the VFD symbol.

If you notice in TCC when Violet, Klaus, and Sunny approach Olivia's tent they see the symbol on the tent and immediatly think that it was the same eye as Olaf's eye, and Jaques eye, and the eye that had always been watching them, but the picture at the head of a chapter of Olivia's tent shows that the eye in this case is the VFD insignia, yet in other books such as TWW the last chapter picture shows Olaf's ankle with an actaul oval shaped eye.

I always figured that Brett Helquist, bless his heart, didn't know until TCC that the eye was supposed to be the hidden-VFD symbol and so until then had just drawn a normal eye in the illustrations, although DH had meant for it to be the funky VFD eye in the first place.

Well sure, but I like rationalizing why it would be true within the world of the series instead of just the publishing world.

Maybe the old organisation used the oval eye, and thats why Jaques has it, but then they "goodies" changed their insignia to the hidden VFD letters, but he still kept the old tatoo

Maybe the tattoo and the insignia are just different.
