Does anyone know if this is a real code? (Meaning is it one you can figure out and use) or is it just something Daniel came up with for his stories and is of no use at all.

It's both! Daniel made it up as far as we know, but it works and you could use it ... though there really are codes that are easier to use out there.

I'm good at decoding Sebald. It says No it isn't, doesn't it!

And I mean that for the "of no use" line. It's very useful, like when you want to mislead an enemy and say you're going to Australia but you're really going to a mall, or transfer a sugarbowl to a safe, hidden place.

Okay so how do you use it? Is it every 13th letter or something? I'm not very good at code, so could some one tell me how!!!

First there's some type of a bell ringing. The first word after that is the first word of the code. Count ten words, there's your next code word. Repeat until the next bell ringing. For examples, see the Vineyard of Fragrant Drapes letter in LSUA.
